A note on etiquette

Wedding gift certificate etiquette.

Wedding gift certificates land in two situations: as a contribution to a fund (honeymoon, house, charity-of-choice), or as a stand-alone experience gift outside the registry. Both are appropriate as long as you're explicit about what the certificate redeems.

For a fund contribution, write the fund name on the certificate line ('Toward the Smith honeymoon fund') and your contribution amount below. Hand it to the couple inside a card during the reception, or mail it with the card if you can't attend.

For an experience gift outside the registry — a dinner at the couple's favorite restaurant, a service for after the wedding (housekeeping, meal delivery, photography), a weekend cabin — write the experience itself on the certificate line. Specificity is the whole point: 'one weekend at the lake cabin' beats '$300.'

Skip a certificate entirely if the couple's registry covers what you'd give. The certificate format is for gifts that wouldn't fit on a registry list — services, experiences, or fund contributions.

Wedding FAQs

Wedding gift certificate questions.

Is a printed gift certificate appropriate for a wedding?
Yes, if it's used for the right type of gift. Honeymoon-fund contributions, services for after the wedding, and stand-alone experience gifts all work well as certificates. Don't use a certificate if a registry item would be more useful.
What's a typical wedding gift certificate amount?
For a couple you know well, $100-$250 is the common range for a contribution. For close family or wedding-party-level closeness, $250-$500+. For coworkers or distant family, $50-$100 is standard. Match the formality of the wedding.
Should I write a check or fill in an amount on the certificate?
Both. The certificate is the presentation; a check or cash inside the card is the actual transfer. The certificate explains what the money is for ('Toward the honeymoon,' 'A weekend at the lake cabin') so the couple knows your intent.
Can I use one of these for a bridal shower instead?
Yes — the Pink Frame and Yellow Bow especially work for bridal showers. The Baby Shower page is also relevant if it's a couples-shower or co-ed event.
What if I want to give a service the couple will use after the wedding?
That's a great use case — a meal-delivery subscription, a cleaning service, photography for their first anniversary. Write the service name and duration on the certificate line ('One month of meal delivery from [service]'). Pair it with a gift card from the actual provider so they can redeem it.
