Free Nursing Cover Letter Templates

Nurse managers screen applications the way they run a unit: license first, certifications second, then whether your experience fits their patient population and their schedule holes. These three templates carry a letter built in that order — active license and BLS/ACLS in the first line, unit type and typical assignment in the middle, and shift availability stated plainly, because for a hiring manager staring at a night-shift gap, availability is the whole conversation.

How nurse managers actually read applications.

A nurse manager reading applications is solving a staffing puzzle: license, competencies, and schedule, in that order. The letter that gets an interview answers the puzzle directly:

  • License and certs, first line. State, RN, compact status if you have it, BLS/ACLS/PALS. Recruiters filter before managers read — make the filter’s job instant.
  • Your unit, in numbers. Patient ratios, acuity, the EHR, the devices and drips. “Med-surg, five patients, Epic” is a complete clinical sentence — managers can place you on their unit from it.
  • One contribution beyond the assignment. Precepting, charge shifts, committee work, a unit-level improvement. It signals you’ll be part of the unit’s fabric, not just its schedule.
  • Availability, stated plainly. Shift, weekends, start date. Managers hire against specific holes in a schedule — the letter that names its availability answers their first practical question.

For residencies and competitive units,add one honest sentence about why this patient population — it’s the question every panel asks, and the letter that answers it early reads as self-aware rather than coached.

Nursing cover letter FAQ

What should a nursing cover letter include?
License and certifications in the first sentence (state, RN, BLS/ACLS/PALS — the recruiter filters on these), your unit type and typical patient assignment, the EHR you chart in, one quantified contribution (precepting, committee work, a falls or CAUTI improvement), and your real shift availability. That last one is underrated: a manager with a nights-and-weekends hole reads 'available for nights, including weekends' as the most beautiful sentence in the letter.
Do nurses actually need a cover letter?
For routine staff postings at short-staffed facilities, often no — the license does the work. But for the applications that are actually competitive — new-grad residencies, Magnet hospitals, ICU/ED/L&D transfers, and anything with hundreds of applicants per cohort — the letter is one of the few places you're a person instead of a license number. Residency programs in particular read them closely for why-nursing and why-here.
How do I write a new grad nursing cover letter?
Treat clinical rotations as experience: name the units, total clinical hours, the skills you performed (not observed), and your capstone or preceptorship placement with what your preceptor trusted you to do solo. Add NCLEX status and date. Close with genuine interest in the unit's patient population — new-grad hiring is a bet on trajectory and retention, so 'I want to build my practice on this unit' matters more than any GPA.
How do I show I fit a specific unit?
Mirror the unit's reality: its patient population, acuity, and pace. 'Six years of med-surg with five-patient assignments' tells an ICU manager something different than it tells a clinic manager — so translate: name your ratios, the drips and devices you manage, rapid responses you've called, floats you've taken. Then echo the posting's own language for skills. Unit fit is the real question behind every nursing interview; answer it in the letter first.
Should I explain employment gaps or why I'm leaving my current hospital?
Not in the letter. A cover letter is forward-looking — what you bring and why this unit — and any explanation of departures reads defensive in writing, even graceful ones. Keep the letter clean; prepare a two-sentence, blame-free answer for the interview, where tone and context work in your favor. The one exception: a long planned gap (family, travel, education) can get half a sentence if it explains your availability date.
