Why does Alaska say a bill of sale can't transfer ownership?
Because the DMV routes ownership through Form 812 (Application for Title & Registration) plus the signed-over title — the bill of sale is explicitly 'not valid for ownership transfer' in Alaska's words. It still earns its keep as the price-and-condition record, the receipt both parties keep, and the document that answers disputes later.
What taxes apply to an Alaska private vehicle sale?
No state sales tax — Alaska has none. What exists instead is local: several boroughs and cities levy a motor vehicle registration tax (MVRT) collected with registration, varying by location and vehicle age. Your borough decides your number; many Alaskans pay nothing at all.
