Titling & registration

Even a homemade trailer needs a paper trail.

Most states title and register trailers above a weight threshold, and the buyer brings the bill of sale to the DMV to do it. Two numbers matter there: the VIN or serial number stamped on the tongue or frame, and the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating), which sets the registration class and fee.

Selling a homemade or older trailer with no VIN? Write “homemade” or “none” in the VIN field — many states then issue an assigned VIN after an inspection, and your bill of sale is the document that starts that process.
What is a trailer bill of sale?

A paper record of the transfer.

A trailer bill of sale documents the date, price, and condition of the sale and identifies the trailer by VIN or serial number. Both buyer and seller sign, and each keeps a copy.

Not legal advice. State title and registration rules for trailers vary by weight and type — confirm your local requirements before completing the transfer.
