Frequently asked questions

When does the Japan fiscal year start and end?
The Japanese fiscal year (会計年度, kaikei nendo) runs from 1 April through 31 March the following year. The current fiscal year is referenced by the calendar year in which it begins — so FY2026 in Japan means 1 April 2026 – 31 March 2027. This applies to government budgets, public companies, and most Japanese corporations uniformly.
Why does Japan use April–March?
Aligns with two cultural anchors: the Japanese school year (which also runs April–March) and the historical Meiji-era government budgeting cycle. The April start is also tied to the cherry blossom season — symbolically the start of a new year of activity, even though the calendar year itself rolls over in January.
Who uses the Japan fiscal year calendar?
Japanese tax planners filing with the National Tax Agency (国税庁, NTA), Japanese corporate finance teams, accountants serving Japanese clients, FDI (foreign direct investment) teams managing Japanese subsidiaries, multinationals coordinating their Japan-region books, and government / public sector reporting. Also useful for US/EU companies doing Japan business who need to align with local FY conventions.
Are Japanese national holidays marked?
The generator currently marks US federal holidays. Japanese national holidays (New Year's Day, Coming of Age Day, National Foundation Day, Vernal Equinox Day, Showa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day, Children's Day, Marine Day, Mountain Day, Respect for the Aged Day, Autumnal Equinox Day, Sports Day, Culture Day, Labor Thanksgiving Day, Emperor's Birthday) are not auto-labeled. Write them in by hand or use the fillable Yearly Event Calendar PDF to type them.
How does this align with the Japanese school year?
Japanese schools follow the same April–March calendar as the fiscal year. So this layout doubles as a school-year calendar for Japanese K-12 and university planning — first semester (April–July), summer break (August), second semester (September–December), winter break (late December – early January), third semester (January–March), spring break / graduation (late March).
Can I print it for FY2027 or later?
Yes — the underlying Academic Calendar generator lets you pick any start year. Set the start month to April and the year to the Japanese fiscal year you need.
