Frequently asked questions

When does the UK fiscal year start and end?
The UK financial year (also called the fiscal year or tax year) runs from 6 April through 5 April the following year for individuals (income tax purposes), and 1 April through 31 March for corporations and government accounts. Most accountancy and government reporting uses the corporate convention (1 April – 31 March), which is what this calendar layout follows.
Why does the UK tax year start in April, not January?
Historical accident: in 1752 Britain switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, dropping 11 days. Rather than collect a year's tax in 354 days, the Treasury extended the year — and the start date drifted from 25 March (Lady Day) to 5 April, where it has stayed ever since for individual tax. The corporate 1 April convention aligned with that legacy.
Who uses the UK fiscal year calendar?
HMRC tax planners, Companies House filers, UK corporate finance teams, accountants and bookkeepers serving UK clients, charities reporting to the Charity Commission, NHS Trusts, and any business whose books align with the UK financial year rather than the calendar year. Also useful for UK schools (financial planning, distinct from the academic year).
Are UK bank holidays marked?
The generator currently marks US federal holidays. UK bank holidays (New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Early May / Spring / Summer Bank Holidays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day) are not auto-labeled — write them in by hand on the printed calendar, or use the fillable PDF version of the Yearly Event Calendar to type them per date.
How does this differ from the US Fiscal Year Calendar?
Same one-page layout, different start month. The US federal fiscal year runs October–September; the UK financial year runs April–March. If your work spans both jurisdictions, print one of each — the layouts pair cleanly side-by-side.
Can I print it for the next UK fiscal year?
Yes — the underlying generator (Academic Calendar, used for any 12-month start-anywhere window) lets you pick the starting year. Set the start month to April and the year to the upcoming UK fiscal year start.
