Moves the letters only — the frame stays where it is. Steps are 0.1%, about a pixel, for centring by eye.
Pinyon Script has very fine strokes. Cut small in vinyl they may be too fine to weed — cut it larger, or pick a heavier face, if this is going on a machine rather than a printer.
Not every script interlocks
Whether two capitals weave together depends on how far their flourishes reach past the letter body — and that varies enormously between scripts. We measured it across the whole library. Pinyon Script overlaps by roughly a third of its width while its ink barely collides, which is why it is the default here. Alex Brush and Mrs Saint Delafield also work well.
Tangerine, Petit Formal Script and Sacramento are lovely faces but their capitals overlap by under one percent — set them interlocked and the letters simply stand apart, which looks like a mistake rather than a style.
An honest note on true vine monograms
Interlocking is often confused with the vine monogram, where leafy tendrils grow from the letterforms and weave between them. They are different things, and a true vine monogram needs a purpose-drawn font with separate left, centre and right glyphs designed to interlace.
No such font exists under an open licence — we checked thoroughly, and every recognisable vine monogram face is commercial. Rather than ship a weak imitation and call it vine, this page offers script interlocking, which is a real style in its own right. If we add vine later it will be because we have drawn or licensed it properly.
Questions
What is the difference between an interlocking and a vine monogram?
Interlocking overlaps ordinary script capitals so they weave together. A vine monogram has foliage growing out of the letterforms themselves. The vine style needs a purpose-drawn font; interlocking can be built from any script with generous flourishes.
Which font is best for an interlocking monogram?
Pinyon Script by a clear margin — it has the deepest natural overlap in the library with almost no ink collision. Alex Brush is the cleanest alternative if you want a brush feel rather than an engraved one.
Can I control how much the letters overlap?
Yes. The letter-spacing slider tightens or loosens the weave — pull it negative for a deeper interlock, push it positive if the letters are crowding each other.
