Why this generator

Single solution, honest tiers, reproducible ids

Two things separate a printable sudoku from a good one. The first is uniqueness: a grid with two solutions is broken, because a solver can be right and still be marked wrong. This generator counts solutions before it draws and throws away anything with more than one. The second is honest difficulty. Most generators count givens; this one solves every puzzle with human techniques and labels it by the hardest move that was needed, so Easy is always singles, Medium always adds exactly one locked-candidate step, and Hard always contains an X-Wing, XY-Wing or Swordfish.

Every grid carries an id under it, a difficulty letter plus a seed, and the engine is deterministic, so a PDF is a permanent record: the same id always means the same puzzle. Solutions print after the puzzles with matching ids. Large print caps the layout at two per page so digits never shrink; the blank grids cover the case where you want to write a puzzle in by hand, and the how to play page explains the techniques the tiers are named for.

Sudoku generator questions

How many puzzles can the generator make at once?
Up to six per page across twenty pages, a hundred-plus puzzles in one PDF. Click Generate again for a fresh set; nothing repeats. Every grid is verified for a single solution before it draws, which is why a big expert batch takes a few seconds.
Are two generated puzzles ever the same?
Each click seeds from the clock, so in practice you never see a repeat. Every grid is stamped with a reproducible id under it (a difficulty letter plus a seed, like H-734102), so keep the PDF if you want a specific puzzle back.
How does the generator decide difficulty?
By solving each puzzle with human techniques and recording the hardest one needed: singles for Easy, locked candidates for Medium, X-Wing or XY-Wing or Swordfish for Hard, chains for Expert. Sadistic strips givens further. A puzzle that needs more than its tier allows is re-rated, never shipped mislabelled.
What is the difference between the generator and the difficulty pages?
Same engine. The easy, medium, hard and expert pages open with the generator preset to that tier and add a ready-made 24-puzzle PDF pack with answers, so a teacher or activity coordinator can download without clicking anything. This page is the full control panel.
Can I use generated puzzles commercially, in newsletters or care homes?
Yes. Print and hand them out freely: no signup, no watermark, no attribution required. Community newsletters, classrooms, waiting rooms and activity programs all use them.
Does the generator do 6×6, 4×4 or themed sheets?
Not this one; it is the plain 9×9. The kids generator does 4×4 and 6×6, and the holiday and themed pages wrap the same 9×9 engine in decorated frames. All are linked below.
