The 4×4 is a matching game with numbers as the shapes: four digits, four square boxes, and a Beginner tier that leaves only a few cells open. It suits a child who can recognise 1 to 4, usually from about four years old. The 6×6 is the first real step, because its boxes are three cells wide and two tall; a six-year-old needs a minute to see that the box rule is the same rule with a different shape, and then the 6×6 carries them through second grade.
