Which order do the initials go in?
Most of the time you want natural order — first, middle, last. Emily Marie Brown is E M B, and that is what this maker produces.
There is one older convention worth knowing, because monogrammed gifts regularly arrive with the letters transposed. When the centre letter is drawn larger than the other two, the middle slot traditionally belongs to the surname, and the middle name moves to the right — so the same name becomes E B M. The order flips purely because one letter grew. If you want that arrangement, type the surname into the middle box; the maker draws exactly the initials you give it, in the order you give them.
For a couple sharing a surname, the shared initial goes in the centre with both given names either side, and convention puts the woman’s initial on the left. Two letters is simply first and last, at the same size. Whichever you choose, use the same order on everything you monogram afterwards.
The arrangements, explained
Circle monogram is the classic: three letters of equal height, tapered so the group fills a disc. Standard sets the initials on one baseline and pairs with any frame shape. Split letter takes one large initial, cuts it horizontally and sets the family name into the gap — the format used for door hangers, wooden rounds and metal signs, because it joins an initial and a name into a single shape that cuts in one colour.
Interlocking overlaps script capitals so they weave together. Stacked puts the first and middle initials beside a large surname letter. Vertical runs them as a column, which suits tall narrow objects like a water bottle or a door frame. Block keeps all three the same size with no frame implied, and Single initial is one letter on its own.
Cutting it: Cricut, Silhouette, Glowforge and xTool
The SVG you download is fully outlined. Every letter is a real path rather than live text, so no font has to be installed anywhere for it to cut correctly. That matters more than it sounds: several free monogram tools export live text with a font-family attribute, and when the machine cannot find that exact font it quietly substitutes another and cuts a different shape. The file is also self-contained, with no external references, so it still works offline and will not break later.
It imports into Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, Glowforge, xTool and LightBurn. Worth knowing if you own a Cricut: their own monogram feature lives inside Design Space and needs a paid Cricut Access subscription to send a design to the machine. This one is free, needs no account, and hands you a file you keep — which is also why it works just as well on a Silhouette or a laser.
For vinyl and heat-transfer work, keep an eye on stroke weight. Fine, high contrast faces look beautiful on screen and become very hard to weed at small sizes; the maker warns you when a delicate typeface is likely to give you trouble. For engraving and laser work the heavier slab and display faces cut most cleanly.
What size to make it
Every download is 5400 pixels square — 18 inches at 300 DPI — so it scales down cleanly to anything smaller. As a rough guide: about 3 inches across for a 20 oz tumbler or a mug, 4 to 5 inches on a bath towel placed above the hem, 2 to 3 inches on a hand towel, 3 to 4 inches for a shirt pocket, 8 to 10 inches across the back of a tote or robe, and 10 to 12 inches for a door hanger.
Can you sell what you make?
Yes. Every typeface here is under an open licence — SIL Open Font Licence or Apache 2.0 — and the artwork is generated from our own geometry, so there is no watermark, no attribution requirement and no cap on how many items you make or sell. Craft-marketplace font licences routinely restrict print-on-demand or cap you at a few hundred units; none of that applies here. The single restriction is the ordinary one: you may not redistribute the font files themselves as fonts.
