Split Letter Generator

A split letter monogram is one large initial cut straight across the middle, with a name set into the gap — the format behind almost every wooden round, door hanger and vinyl name sign. This free split letter generator builds one from any initial A to Z: type the letter and the name, choose how high the split sits, and download a cut-ready SVG or a high-resolution PNG. The letter comes out as a single connected shape, so there is no Slice-and-Weld routine and no font to install.

BMICHAEL

B · MICHAEL
One large initial cut by a band carrying the name. Use a heavy face so the strokes survive the cut.

SVG is fully outlined and self-contained — it cuts on Cricut, Silhouette, Glowforge and xTool with no font needed, and the split letter exports as a single connected shape (no welding). PNG is transparent at 5,400×5,400px.

Whose monogram is it?

Primary letter is the big split initial; split letter name is the name set into the band.

How to make a split letter monogram

Type the primary letter and the name that sits in the band, choose a split height — high, medium or low — pick a heavy face and a frame, then download. That is the whole job: the split, the two closing bars and the name are placed for you and the file exports ready to cut.

Made by hand in Cricut Design Space the same monogram is six fiddly steps — type the letter, draw a rectangle across its middle, Slice, delete the offcuts, add thin bars to close the cut edges, then Weld it all back into one path. Miss the Weld and the sign falls apart on the mat, and Silhouette users go through the same dance with the knife tool and compound paths. Here the geometry is already done; import the SVG and cut.

Split monogram letters for wood, vinyl and metal signs

The download is one flat, connected silhouette — exactly what a vinyl decal for a wood surface or a peel-and-stick letter needs. Weed it, transfer it, done. Cut it from adhesive vinyl for a painted wooden round, from HTV for a shirt or tote, or send the SVG to a laser or metal shop for a steel monogram.

Ten to twelve inches across suits a door hanger; around eighteen inches suits a wall or porch sign. Every download is 5400 pixels square — eighteen inches at 300 DPI — so it scales down to any of those cleanly, and up to a twelve-inch decal without softening.

Pick a heavy typeface for a clean split

The split is the reason weight matters. Cutting a band through a fine, high-contrast letter can remove a hairline stroke entirely, leaving a piece that falls out of the design or tears while weeding. Bookman, Bevan, Alfa Slab One, Archivo Black and Titan One all survive the cut with room to spare.

Steer clear of the delicate serifs and scripts for split work — Playfair, Prata and the calligraphic faces look wonderful whole and lose their legs the moment a band goes through them.

Questions

How is a split letter monogram different from a circle or interlocking one?

It is a single large initial cut straight across, with a name set into the gap — not three initials in a circle and not two letters woven together. That one-initial-plus-band shape is the door-hanger and wooden-sign format, which is why this maker asks for one letter and a name rather than a full set of initials. You also choose where the split sits: high, medium or low on the letter.

How do I split a letter in Cricut Design Space?

You don't have to. Splitting a letter by hand means slicing a rectangle through it, deleting the offcuts, adding bars to close the edges and welding it back into one path. This maker does all of that for you, and the SVG you download is already a single connected shape — import it and cut, no Slice and no Weld.

Can I make a split monogram of any letter, and change where it splits?

Any letter A through Z, and the split height is yours — high, medium or low. Type the initial the surname calls for (R, S, A, G, D) and the band and cut are built around it; if a particular letter reads better cut high or low, move the split to suit it. That split-location control is unique to this maker.

Can I put a split letter monogram on wood or a vinyl decal?

Yes — that is what it is made for. Cut the SVG from adhesive vinyl and apply it to a painted wooden round or door hanger, or use peel-and-stick vinyl straight onto the surface. Because the letter exports as one connected shape it weeds and transfers in a single piece.

What size should a split monogram door hanger be, and what font works?

Ten to twelve inches across for a door hanger, around eighteen for a wall or porch sign; every download is 5400 pixels square (eighteen inches at 300 DPI), so it covers both. Use a heavy face — Bookman, Bevan, Alfa Slab One, Archivo Black — because a band cut through a fine, high-contrast letter can remove a whole hairline stroke.
