Split letter monogram generator
A split letter monogram is one large initial cut horizontally, with the family name set into the gap. It is the format behind almost every wooden round, door hanger and metal name sign — and until now the only way to make one was to build it by hand.

This arrangement uses one initial — the surname’s. Ordering rules apply to monograms of two or more letters.
SVG is fully outlined and self-contained — it cuts on Cricut, Silhouette, Glowforge and xTool with no font needed. PNG is transparent at 5,400×5,400px— 18" at 300 DPI, which scales down cleanly onto anything smaller.

Moves the letters only — the frame stays where it is. Steps are 0.1%, about a pixel, for centring by eye.
The Slice-and-Weld routine this replaces
Made by hand in Cricut Design Space, a split monogram takes six steps: type the letter, draw a rectangle across its middle, Slice, delete the debris, add two thin bars to close the cut edges, then Weld everything back into one path. Miss the Weld and the sign falls apart on the mat. Silhouette users go through an equivalent dance with the knife tool and compound paths.
Here it is one field. Type the family name into the band and the geometry is done for you — the initial is masked, the band is placed, and the whole thing exports as a single connected shape ready to cut.
Choose a heavy typeface for this one
The split is the reason weight matters. Cutting a band through a fine, high-contrast letter can remove a hairline stroke entirely, leaving a piece that falls out of the design or tears while weeding. Bookman, Bevan, Alfa Slab One, Archivo Black and Titan One all survive the cut with room to spare.
Steer clear of the delicate serifs and scripts for split work — Playfair, Prata and the calligraphic faces look wonderful whole and lose their legs the moment a band goes through them.
Questions
What letter should I use for a split monogram?
The surname initial, almost always — the band underneath carries the full family name, so the letter and the name agree. That is why the band here follows the surname you type until you override it.
How do I weld a split monogram in Cricut Design Space?
You don't need to. Welding exists to join the letter and the closing bars into one cuttable path, and the file you download here is already a single connected shape. Import it and cut.
What size should a split monogram door hanger be?
Ten to twelve inches across is the usual range for a door hanger, and around eighteen inches for a wall or porch sign. Every download here is 5400 pixels square, which is eighteen inches at 300 DPI, so it covers both without scaling up.
