6 Funeral Prayer Card Templates

A prayer card is small enough for a wallet or the pages of a Bible: a photograph, name and dates on the front, and a prayer, psalm or poem on the back. Each template prints eight cards on one US Letter sheet, fronts on the first page and backs on the second. The Catholic card carries the Eternal Rest prayer and the Hail Mary.

The texts provided

Prayers and verses on these cards

  • Catholic: Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, followed by the Hail Mary.
  • Classic: the Twenty-Third Psalm, complete.
  • Cross: the Lord’s Prayer, from Matthew 6.
  • Roses: the traditional Irish blessing, May the road rise up to meet you.
  • Heavenly Sky: John 14:1–3, Let not your heart be troubled.
  • Black & White: Tennyson’s Crossing the Bar, all four stanzas.

All six are traditional or King James texts in the public domain. To use a different prayer, select the text on the back and type over it. Keep to about a hundred words; beyond that the type becomes too small to read at this size.

Some well-loved prayers and poems are still under copyright. If the one you want is modern, check before printing it; our poems and verses page explains how.

Two-sided printing

How to print and cut prayer cards

  1. Print page 1, the fronts, on cardstock.
  2. Turn the sheet over and print page 2, the backs. On a duplex printer choose two-sided, flip on short edge.
  3. Hold the sheet to the light: each back should sit behind a front.
  4. Cut on the dashed lines, three cuts down and one across, for eight cards of about 2⅝ by 4 inches.

Home printers rarely line up the two sides perfectly. The layouts keep every element well inside the cut lines, so a shift of a sixteenth of an inch does not show. A copy shop can print, cut and laminate from the PDF if you want the heavier feel of traditional holy cards.

Questions families ask

What size is a funeral prayer card?
Traditional prayer cards are about 2½ by 4¼ inches. These finish at roughly 2⅝ by 4 inches so that eight fit one Letter sheet, and they slip into a wallet or a standard card sleeve.
Is a prayer card the same as a Mass card?
No. A prayer card, sometimes called a holy card or memorial card, is given out by the family. A Mass card is given to the family by a friend to say that a Mass will be offered for the person who died; it comes from a parish or religious order.
Can I use these for a non-Catholic service?
Yes. Five of the six carry scripture, a blessing or a poem that suits any Christian service, and the Tennyson card is not religious. The fronts say In Loving Memory on every design.
How do I change her to him in the prayer?
Select the word and retype it. In the PDF the back text is one linked field, so a single change updates all eight cards.
