Modern Resume Templates

A modern resume in 2026 isn't about decoration — it's a layout with one structural idea: a credentials sidebar, a metrics band, a name banner, a two-column split. These twelve are the most current designs in the library, one per field, each built so the structure reads on screen and still parses in an applicant tracking system.

Twelve current designs

The modern layout in each field.

Sidebars, stat rows, and banners — each one chosen because its structure fits how that field is hired. All one page, all free in Word and Google Docs.

What modern means now

What separates a modern resume from a dated one.

The resumes that look modern in 2026 share a few moves — and the resumes that look dated share the opposite ones:

  • One structural idea, not five. A sidebar or a stat band or a banner — the designs here commit to one and keep the rest clean.
  • Numbers up front. A metrics row (renewals, uptime, students, revenue) says more in one line than a paragraph of duties.
  • Real typography. A confident name, a clear hierarchy, generous spacing. No Times New Roman, no centered everything, no photo.
  • Built for a screen first. Most resumes are read on a laptop or phone before they’re printed — modern layouts are designed for that order.

Need the safest possible parse for a heavily automated pipeline? Pair the design with the advice on the ATS-friendly page — or choose a simple template. Design and marketing candidates: the graphic designer and marketing sets go further.

Modern, quickly

Three steps.

  1. Pick the modern layout for your field; the sidebar and banner designs are the most distinctive.
  2. Fill the structural element first — the stat band, the credentials sidebar — then the experience.
  3. Export a PDF; check it once on your phone, since that’s where it’s read first.

Modern resume FAQ

What does a modern resume look like in 2026?
One page, a clear visual hierarchy, one structural element (sidebar, metrics band, or banner), a single accent color, and no photo or objective statement. Numbers near the top. Everything readable on a phone. The templates above are that definition applied to twelve different fields.
Are modern two-column resumes ATS-friendly?
The good ones are. The risk with two columns is reading order — some older parsers read straight across. Our two-column designs are built as proper tables with a single logical order, and every one exports to a clean PDF. If you're applying through a strict automated pipeline, the single-column modern designs (stat band, banner) are zero-risk.
Modern vs. creative resume — which should I use?
Modern means structured and current; creative means the resume is itself a design sample — illustration, unusual layout, heavy color. Modern suits almost every field. Creative suits design, advertising, and some marketing roles, and hurts nearly everywhere else.
Is a modern resume template appropriate for a conservative industry?
Choose the restrained end: a stat band or a subtle sidebar rather than a bold banner. Law, finance, and government readers expect clean and current, not flashy — several designs above (the slate and navy variants) are built for exactly that.
Can I get a modern resume template free in Word and Google Docs?
Every template here is free in both — no signup, no watermark. Download Word for the .docx, or Open in Google Docs for a one-click copy in your Drive.
Should a modern resume have a photo?
In the U.S., no — most employers prefer resumes without photos to avoid bias concerns, and ATS software ignores them anyway. None of these templates include one.
