The first version of these score sheets shipped on this site back in 2010 — the four color PDFs you can grab below (they are vintage), it’s possible some PDF readers don’t work perfectly with them. I rebuilt the whole approach in May 2026 and leveraged the newest software to do it. The custom builder structures the page now so you can just focus on the actual scores. The four color sheets are still here for the print-and-go if that’s easier — if you’re running league night the same lineup week after week, the builder is the move.

How to fill out a bowling score sheet

Strike

All ten pins on the first roll. Worth 10 + the next two rolls.

Spare

All ten pins on two rolls. Worth 10 + the next single roll.

–

Miss

No pin hit on that roll. Just the pins (zero) count.

Foul

Crossed the foul line. Roll counts as zero.

Split

Pins remaining are separated by at least one knocked-down pin.

Frame 10 bonus

Strike or spare in the tenth gives you bonus rolls inside that frame.

Maximum game score is 300 — twelve consecutive strikes. A score of 200 is the threshold for the 200 Club; 300 earns the rare Perfect Game certificate.

Worked example

Bowling score sheet example: 3 frames scored by hand

Watch how strikes and spares earn bonus pins. The math takes a minute to internalize but never changes.

Frame 1 — Strike (X). All ten pins down on the first roll. We don’t score the frame yet — a strike is worth 10 plus the next two rolls. Frame 1 is pending.
Frame 2 — 7 then a spare (7 / ). Knock down 7 on the first ball, then the remaining 3 on the second. The spare is worth 10 plus the next single roll. Now we can score Frame 1: 10 + 7 + 3 = 20. Frame 1 running total: 20. Frame 2 is still pending (we need the next roll).
Frame 3 — 9 then a miss (9 - ). 9 on the first ball, miss the 10-pin on the second. Now Frame 2 scores: the spare is worth 10 + (the 9 from Frame 3 ball 1) = 19. Running total: 20 + 19 = 39. Frame 3 is just an open frame — 9 + 0 = 9. Running total: 39 + 9 = 48 through three frames.

Same pattern for the rest of the game. The 10th frame gets up to three rolls so a strike there earns the full 30-pin bonus. Twelve strikes in a row = a 300 game.

Bowling scoring terms: 15 words on every score sheet

From the basics to the lingo league bowlers use without explaining. Most of these are standard USBC vocabulary.

Strike (X)

All ten pins down on the first roll. Worth 10 + the next two rolls.

Spare ( / )

All ten pins down on two rolls. Worth 10 + the next single roll.

Open frame

A frame with no strike or spare. Just the sum of pins down (0-9).

Turkey

Three strikes in a row. The first strike of the turkey is worth 30 pins.

Four bagger

Four strikes in a row. After a turkey, the count is 'bagger' for each additional strike.

Clean game

A game with no open frames - every frame finished with a strike or spare.

Perfect game

Twelve strikes in a row, scoring 300. The maximum possible game.

Pocket

The 1-3 pin gap (right-hander) or 1-2 (lefty) - the ideal entry point for a strike.

Leave

The pins still standing after the first ball.

Bucket

Four-pin leave: 2-4-5-8 (right-handed) or 3-5-6-9 (lefty).

Washout

A leave with the head pin still up and gaps behind it: 1-2-4-10 (R) or 1-3-6-7 (L).

Baby split

Two pins separated by one: 3-10 (R) or 2-7 (L). Convertible with practice.

Greek church

Five-pin split: 4-6-7-9-10 (R) or 4-6-7-8-10 (L). Famously near-impossible.

Foul (F)

Crossed the foul line. The roll counts as zero.

Tenth frame

Special last frame - a strike or spare earns bonus rolls inside the frame itself, up to three rolls total.

How do you score a bowling game?

Each frame is two rolls — except the tenth, which can be three. Knock all ten pins down on the first roll: that's a strike (X). All ten on two rolls: a spare (/). A strike is worth 10 plus the next two rolls. A spare is worth 10 plus the next single roll. Open frames just total the pins knocked down. The maximum score in a single game is 300 — twelve consecutive strikes.

What's the third box in the tenth frame for?

The tenth frame has special rules: if your first or second roll knocks all ten pins down (strike or spare), you get bonus rolls inside that same frame. The third box holds that bonus roll. If you don't get a strike or spare in the tenth, the third box stays blank.

What do the symbols on a bowling score sheet mean?

X is a strike (all ten pins on the first roll). / is a spare (all ten pins across two rolls). - is a miss (gutter ball / no pin hit). F is a foul (over the line). ◯ marks a split (pins remaining are separated). Numbers show pins knocked down on that roll.

How is a handicap calculated in league bowling?

The standard formula is (Basis Score − Bowler's Average) × percentage, usually 90%. Common basis scores are 210 for recreational leagues and 220 for competitive ones. So a 150-average bowler in a 220-basis 90% league has a handicap of (220 − 150) × 0.90 = 63 pins added per game. Apollo's score sheet has a Total column where the league secretary can pencil in the handicap-adjusted total.

How many bowlers fit on one score sheet?

The Apollo generator supports 1 to 6 bowlers per sheet. Standard USBC league teams are 4 or 5 bowlers, so the 4-bowler and 5-bowler sheets are the most common. Trios bowling tournaments use the 3-bowler sheet; doubles use the 2-bowler sheet.
