6 Funeral Thank-You Card Templates

In the weeks after a funeral there are many people to thank and little energy to do it. These cards carry a short printed message from the family, with space beneath to add a handwritten line where you want to. They print four to a sheet and fit a standard A2 envelope.

What to say

Wording for a funeral thank-you card

The printed message does the general thanking. It can be two sentences:

Thank you for your kindness and sympathy at a time when it was deeply appreciated. Your thoughtfulness will always be remembered.
A general message
The family of [Name] gratefully acknowledges your kind expression of sympathy.
Formal and brief
Thank you for the beautiful flowers and for being with us. They brought comfort on a hard day.
For flowers
Your gift to [Charity] in [Name]’s memory means a great deal to our family. Thank you.
For a memorial donation

Then sign as the family, and where you can, add a handwritten sentence naming what the person did: the casserole, the long drive, the story told at the service. That one line is what people keep.

Who and when

Who should receive a thank-you card

  • Anyone who sent flowers, food or a memorial gift
  • Pallbearers, readers, musicians and others who took part
  • The officiant, and the funeral director if they went beyond the usual
  • Friends who gave practical help: driving, childcare, housing relatives
  • Nurses, hospice staff and carers, often with one card to the whole unit

There is no deadline. Within two or three months is customary, and no one who has been through a loss will mind a card that arrives later. Sharing the list among family members is entirely proper.

Questions families ask

Are these folded cards or flat cards?
Flat. Each is a single panel about 4 by 5¼ inches, printed on one side, with room under the message to write. Flat cards print four to a sheet and need no scoring or folding.
What envelope fits?
An A2 envelope, 4⅜ by 5¾ inches, sold in boxes at office-supply and craft stores.
Do I need to send a card to everyone who attended?
No. Attendance is acknowledged by the thank-you printed in the program. Cards go to people who did or gave something in particular.
