What a four-year-old can actually do with a sudoku
At four, a sudoku is a matching game with numbers as the shapes. The Beginner 4×4 leaves three or four cells empty, so each one is "this row has 1, 2 and 4, so what is missing?" Sit alongside for the first puzzle, point at one row, and let them find the gap. Most four-year-olds want the second puzzle before the adult has finished explaining the first.
Print one per page so the cells are big enough for a crayon, and keep the answer key for yourself; a four-year-old is not checking their work yet. If numerals are still abstract, wait a month rather than pushing. The age-five page starts at the same 4×4 with slightly more cells open.
