Fourth-grade sudoku: making the 9×9 the everyday puzzle
The 9×9 asks a nine-year-old to track nine numbers across nine rows, nine columns and nine boxes, which sounds like a lot until they realise the method is the one they learned on the 4×4: find a line or box missing one number. Easy on the 9×9 is built so that scanning always finds that forced cell. It takes a fourth grader twenty minutes at first and ten by the end of the term.
Medium on the kids 9×9 is the first tier that adds a real step, the locked candidate, and it is worth saving for later in the year rather than leading with it.
