Kindergarten sudoku: the 4×4 as a number-sense exercise
Kindergarten teachers use the 4×4 because it rehearses exactly what the year is about: recognising 1 to 4, noticing which one is missing from a set, and holding a rule in mind. Easy leaves roughly half the cells open, so a five-year-old scans a row, then a column, then the little box, and finds that every gap has only one answer. Four per page makes a class set on one sheet.
The tier to watch for is Medium on the same 4×4, which opens more cells but still needs nothing beyond scanning. Once a five-year-old finishes Medium without help, the 6×6 on the age-six page is the natural next grid. Do not skip straight to it; the momentum of finishing is what carries a young solver.
