The one technique that makes a sudoku medium
A medium puzzle on this site is one the grader could not finish with singles alone but did finish once locked candidates were allowed: if a digit inside a 3×3 box can only sit in one row of that box, it cannot appear in that row anywhere else, so the solver erases it there and a single appears. That is the whole step. No pairs, no X-Wings, nothing you would call advanced.
It is also why a medium puzzle from here feels consistent from one sheet to the next. Newspapers often label by give-away count, which produces a "medium" that is sometimes a singles-only walk and sometimes a hard puzzle in disguise. Grading by technique means the pack above is 24 puzzles that all play the same way.
How to solve a medium sudoku without pencilling every cell
Run the singles first: scan each digit 1 through 9 across the three bands of boxes and place anything forced. When that stalls, pencil candidates only in the box that looks most constrained and look for a digit confined to a single row or column inside it. Erase that digit from the rest of the line, and the singles usually start again. Pencil-marking the whole grid on a medium is the slow way; the pencil-mark grid exists for hard puzzles.
When a medium sheet starts feeling routine, the next tier is hard sudoku, where X-Wing and XY-Wing patterns appear. If it still feels like a fight, drop back to easy for a week; speed on singles is what makes medium comfortable.
