Expert, evil, diabolical: the same tier under different names
Every puzzle site tops out with a scary word. Web Sudoku says evil, others say diabolical, extreme or fiendish. On this site the tier is Expert, and the definition is mechanical: the grader finished the puzzle only after singles, locked candidates, pairs, X-Wing, XY-Wing and Swordfish all ran out, which means a chain (forcing chain, XY-chain or a bifurcation) was required. If a puzzle needed no chain it was re-rated Hard and left this page.
Sadistic is the step above, offered in the generator rather than as a pack. It keeps the single-solution guarantee but drives the give-away count toward the minimum the engine can still verify, so the chains run longer. It exists because a few solvers asked for something past evil; most will find Expert plenty.

How to solve an evil sudoku without guessing wildly
Pencil every candidate and run the named patterns first; on an expert grid they usually clear a third of the cells before the wall. At the wall, pick a cell with two candidates and follow one of them forward on scrap paper (the pencil-mark grid printed six per page is scrap paper with the boxes drawn): if it produces a contradiction, the other candidate is true. That is a chain, and it is a legitimate technique, not cheating.
