Inkjet on a parcel is a different bet

An envelope printed with inkjet ink spends its life indoors and in a bag. A parcel gets stacked in a yard, carried through weather, and left on a doorstep. It is the same ink doing a noticeably harder job, and it is worth a moment’s thought before a valuable box goes out with a dye-based address on it.

None of which means you need a different printer. Print the address a size larger than feels necessary, let the sheet dry before you handle it, and run a strip of clear tape over the finished label. That combination has kept a lot of small shipping operations running on ordinary inkjets for years.

Frequently asked questions

Is 8163 the inkjet version of 5163?
Yes. Identical geometry — ten 2″ × 4″ labels, two across and five down — on face stock coated for inkjet ink rather than laser heat. The same PDF prints correctly on either, so the only decision is which box matches your printer.
Will an inkjet address survive a rainy delivery?
Standard dye-based inkjet ink runs when it gets properly wet, and a parcel spends more time outdoors than an envelope does. Two easy mitigations: print the address large so partial blurring still reads, and put a strip of clear packing tape over the finished label. The tape trick costs nothing and is what most small sellers end up doing.
Why does my parcel label look lighter than it did on screen?
Inkjet label stock is more absorbent than photo paper, so ink spreads slightly into the fibres and reads lighter. Nudging the text size up a point or two does more for legibility than trying to fix it in the printer settings, and a plain black address at 16pt on a matte label is about as scannable as home printing gets.
Can I use these for return labels on outbound boxes?
Yes, and at this size you can put the return address and the destination on the same sheet — set the maker to a list, put your own address in one block and the destination in the next, and you get both from one pass. Just make sure the destination goes on the largest face and the return address goes near a corner, so nobody confuses the two.
What else shares the 8163 grid?
5163, 5263, 5523, 5663, 5963, 8463, 8663 and 94207 all sit on the same 10-up layout. They vary by printer type, adhesive strength and weather resistance rather than by where the labels are on the sheet, so this template covers all of them.
