Why this size won

Two by four inches is not an arbitrary number. It is roughly the largest label that still fits ten to a Letter sheet without the gutters getting wasteful, and roughly the smallest that holds a full address at a size somebody can read while moving. Every other parcel-label format is a variation on one of those two constraints.

The practical effect is that 5163 has become the default for anyone shipping in small volumes — market stalls, online sellers before they graduate to a thermal printer, offices sending documents, and anybody who posts more than a couple of parcels a month.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of an Avery 5163 label?
Two inches tall by four inches wide, arranged two across and five down for ten labels per US Letter sheet. There is a three-sixteenths-inch gutter between the two columns and no gap between rows.
Is 5163 big enough for an international address?
Comfortably. Five or six lines fit at a readable size, which covers a name, two address lines, a city line, a postcode line and a country. Put the country on its own line in capitals at the bottom — that is the convention carriers expect and it survives being read quickly.
Can I print a carrier's shipping label onto 5163 stock?
Not from this page, and generally not a good idea by hand. Carrier labels carry a barcode that has to be reproduced at an exact scale to scan, and most carrier label files are sized for a 4″ × 6″ thermal label rather than a 2″ × 4″ sheet label. Print the carrier's file on the stock it specifies and use 5163 for addressing parcels you are handing over at a counter.
How does 5163 differ from 5164?
Both are four inches wide, but 5164 is a much taller label at 3-1/3 inches, giving six to a sheet rather than ten. 5164 suits packing slips and content lists; 5163 is the everyday address size. We build to the 5163 grid only — 5164's exact top margin is not something we have been able to confirm from a published spec, so we have not shipped it rather than guess.
Do these work on padded envelopes?
Yes, provided you apply the label to a flat area and press it down along all four edges. Padded mailers flex, and a label with a lifted corner catches on sorting equipment. If the mailer is very soft, put the label over a seam-free flat panel rather than across the padded bulge.
