Most of the set is full colour in flag red, navy and cream, with two night-sky fireworks scenes for the older readers and one clean line drawing — the stars and stripes — for anyone printing a summer-reading table's worth or planning to colour it in.
The library summer-reading program is the reason this set exists. Every June a children’s librarian somewhere needs a stack of something red, white and blue to hand out at the desk, and a bookmark with the reader’s own name on it beats a sticker. Which designs suit a parade, a picnic or a classroom?
For the parade route and the town celebration, Old Glory, Bald Eagle, Liberty Bell, Parade Drum and Uncle Sam Hat are the traditional set. For a backyard picnic or the lake, Picnic Watermelon, Cookout, Rocket Popsicle, Sparkler Kid and Fireworks on the Lake match the day. For a classroom or library summer-reading table, the two fireworks scenes, the Patriotic Pup and the Star-Spangled Heart are the crowd-pleasers, and Stars & Stripes is the one to print by the hundred.
Can I use these for Memorial Day or Veterans Day too?
Yes. Nothing in the set names the Fourth. Old Glory, Bald Eagle, Liberty Bell, Liberty Torch, Star-Spangled Heart, Bunting & Star and Stars & Stripes are plain red-white-and-blue designs that work for Memorial Day, Flag Day, Veterans Day, a naturalization ceremony or a scout troop. The fireworks, sparkler and picnic designs are the ones that read specifically as summer.
Which ones use the least ink?
Stars & Stripes is a line drawing on a white ground and costs very little to print — it is also the one to hand out for colouring. Old Glory, Bald Eagle, Liberty Bell, Uncle Sam Hat, Parade Drum and Rocket Popsicle sit on pale grounds and are the next lightest. The two fireworks scenes, Sparkler Kid, Firework Rocket and Liberty Torch have deep night skies and use the most. The ink-friendly badge in the builder marks the light one.
Can I put a name on each bookmark?
Yes. Every design leaves a clear band for a name, and you can type one per bookmark and choose where it sits. The name prints in the design's outline colour on a small white plate, so it stays readable over the night skies and the gingham.
