Surprise Retirement Party Invitations

Three surprise retirement party invitations, each with the secret built in: Surprise!, a gift box bursting with streamers beside a bunch of balloons, badged Shhh! It's a Surprise; Shhh!, the word in a big speech bubble with a party hat and a noisemaker, headed A Surprise Retirement Party and badged Don't Tell Him!; and Envelope Burst, an envelope bursting open with confetti, headed It's a Surprise Retirement Party and badged Arrive by 6:15. The backs carry the plan: Park around the corner · lights off at 7:15, or Hide in the garden · she arrives at 6:45. Surprise! opens in Teal & Coral, Shhh! in Royal Blue & Silver and Envelope Burst in Coral & Turquoise.

Planning tip
Give guests an arrive-by time 15 to 30 minutes before the honoree is due, and put it in the badge where nobody can miss it. Send the invitations to home addresses or personal email, never to a shared work inbox the retiree can see.
How it works

Details, wording, colors, download

Open any design above in the maker. Type the honoree's name, the date and the place; the back carries the one line this party needs: an arrive-by time for a surprise, who is paying for lunch, the drop-in window for an open house, or what to bring to a cookout.

Pick one of the three palettes drawn for the design, then download a 5 x 7 PDF (front and back), a two-per-sheet letter PDF for home printing, print-shop PNGs with bleed, 4 x 6 PNGs for a photo counter, a phone-sized PNG to text or email, or a Word file. For more lines to put on the card, see the retirement invitation wording ideas and the retirement party etiquette guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do you word a surprise retirement party invitation?
Say it's a surprise twice: once on the front (Shhh! It's a Surprise, Don't Tell Him!) and once on the back with the plan (Please keep it a secret · arrive by 6:15). The wording page has more surprise lines and a ready email.
Can I change Don't Tell Him to Don't Tell Her?
Yes. The badge is live text on every design.
How early should guests arrive for a surprise party?
Fifteen to thirty minutes before the honoree. The samples use Arrive by 6:15 for a 6:30 party, and lights off at 7:15 for a 7:00 start with a late arrival.
