Fastpitch softball uses 60-ft base paths at every level — Little League, high school (NFHS), NCAA, and USA Softball. The pitching distance is 43 ft for women's fastpitch (NFHS, NCAA, USA Softball) and 40 ft for Little League; men's fastpitch pitches from 46 ft.
Unlike baseball, there is no raised mound. The pitcher works from a flat 16-ft-diameter circle (8-ft radius). Slow-pitch is a different game on a bigger diamond — typically 65-ft bases and a 50-ft pitching distance.
How to lay out a softball field
Same point-down-square method as baseball, just at 60-ft base paths with a flat pitching circle instead of a mound.
You'll need: 150-ft tape measure · Shorter tapes · Chalk or marking paint · Bases and a pitching rubber
- Set home plate. Place the back point of home plate; everything is measured from here.
- Run the 60-ft base lines. Stretch lines from home through first and third, 60 ft each. Softball uses 60-ft base paths at every fastpitch level.
- Locate second base. Home to second base is 84 ft 10¼ in. on a 60-ft diamond. Second is where the 60-ft swings from first and third meet on the line out from home.
- Mark the pitching circle. Measure the pitching distance along the home-to-second line: 43 ft (NFHS / NCAA / USA Softball women's fastpitch) or 40 ft (Little League). Draw a flat 16-ft-diameter circle (8-ft radius) centered on the rubber.
- Add the batter's and on-deck circles. Batter's boxes flank home plate; on-deck circles sit in foul territory. There is no raised mound — the circle stays level with the infield.
