Running 1000 Books Before Kindergarten
- Enroll at storytime and card sign-up: hand the family sheet 1 and explain that re-reads count.
- Every 100 books: the family brings the sheet in, gets a sticker (or stamps a chart on the wall), and takes the next sheet.
- Keep a simple roster — name, start date, sheets completed — so you can report enrollment and finishers.
- At 500 and 1,000: a certificate, a photo if the family wants one, and (at 1,000) a book to keep.
Prize tiers
- Every 100: a sticker. That is enough — the sheet is the reward.
- 500: a certificate and a small book.
- 1,000: a certificate, a book to keep, and the child's name on the wall or in the newsletter.
Tips from libraries that run it
- Say 'read WITH your child' — parents reading aloud is the whole program.
- Board books and the same bedtime story ten nights running all count. Families need to hear that.
- Offer the Spanish sheet by default in bilingual communities.
