4 questions

Timing

Most timing questions come down to giving guests enough notice to plan, shop and travel, without sending so early that the invitation gets buried under the save-the-dates.

When should you send out bridal shower invitations?

Most hosts mail bridal shower invitations four to six weeks before the shower. That gives guests time to clear the date, look at the registry and order a gift, and the card still feels current when the day comes.

Three weeks is about the shortest window that works for a small, local shower. Go closer to eight weeks when many guests are traveling, when the shower falls near a holiday, or when it lands in a busy season like June.

How far before the wedding is the bridal shower held?

Many showers take place two to three months before the wedding, and few happen in the final two weeks, when the couple's calendar is full and out-of-town family is already arriving.

Holding the shower a little earlier also helps the couple: gifts arrive while there's still time to update the registry, and thank-you notes can go out before the wedding rush.

How early should out-of-town guests get a bridal shower invitation?

Give travelers more notice than local guests: six to eight weeks is common, and a quick call or text before the invitation goes out is a kindness if they'd need flights or a hotel.

It's gracious to invite close relatives who probably can't make the trip. Word it so they feel included rather than expected to travel, and mention a video call or a shower-by-mail option if you're offering one.

What RSVP date should go on a bridal shower invitation?

About one to two weeks before the shower. That leaves time to give the caterer or restaurant a final count, buy enough prizes and set the tables, and it's close enough that guests still remember to answer.

5 questions

Hosting & who pays

Who throws the shower used to be a strict question of etiquette. Today it's mostly a question of who wants to, with a few traditions still worth knowing.

Who traditionally hosts the bridal shower?

Traditionally the maid of honor and bridesmaids host, often with help from a close friend, an aunt or a godmother. Co-workers, church friends and other social circles sometimes host showers of their own.

The older advice that immediate family shouldn't host (because it can look like asking for gifts) has relaxed in many places. Today the bride's or groom's mother often hosts or co-hosts, especially when the bridesmaids live far away.

Who pays for the bridal shower?

Whoever hosts pays. When several people co-host, they usually agree on a budget up front and split it, either evenly or by each person covering a piece: food, decorations, invitations, favors.

It's kind to keep the plan within what every co-host can comfortably afford, and to say so early. A brunch at home costs far less than a restaurant luncheon and is just as warm.

Can a bride host her own bridal shower?

It's traditionally avoided, since a shower is a party where guests bring gifts. If nobody else is able to host, a bride can throw a get-together without the gift-giving, such as a brunch or an open house to celebrate the engagement, and simply not call it a shower.

How do you list co-hosts on a bridal shower invitation?

List the hosts' names on the card, usually at the bottom of the front or on the back: "Hosted by Ava, Mia and Grace" or "Given by her bridesmaids". With many hosts, the group name is cleaner than a long list.

Give one name and one phone number or email for RSVPs, even when several people host. Replies then land in one place and the headcount stays accurate.

Who sends the bridal shower invitations?

The host sends them, with the bride's guest list. The bride usually shares names and addresses, often with the help of her mother and the groom's mother, and the host mails them.

7 questions

Who to invite

The guest list is the question people search most. A few long-standing customs answer most of it, and the rest is up to the bride and the size of the room.

Who should be invited to a bridal shower?

The bride's close family and friends: mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, the wedding party, close friends and the women of the groom's family. For a couples shower, partners and friends of both families come too.

The bride makes the list and the host works within it. A host who needs to keep numbers down can ask her to rank names, so the people who matter most get the first invitations.

Should everyone invited to the bridal shower be invited to the wedding?

Yes, as a long-standing rule. Inviting someone to a shower, where they bring a gift, and then leaving them off the wedding list can feel like being asked for a present without being asked to the celebration.

The common exceptions are a small or destination wedding, an elopement, or an office shower thrown by co-workers. In those cases guests usually understand, and the invitation can say so gently.

Who do you invite to a bridal shower from the groom's side?

The groom's mother, his sisters and grandmothers, and any aunts or cousins who are close to the couple. Including his family is a lovely way for them to get to know the bride before the wedding.

For a couples shower, invite the groom's close friends and their partners as well.

How many people should you invite to a bridal shower?

There's no set number. Many showers are somewhere between a dozen and fifty guests, and the room usually decides: a living room seats far fewer than a restaurant's private room.

Keep in mind that a large guest list means a long gift opening. With more than thirty or so guests, some hosts set up a display shower or let the bride open gifts while guests mingle.

Should you invite co-workers to a bridal shower?

Only co-workers who are also invited to the wedding, by the usual rule. Colleagues often throw a separate office shower, which doesn't carry a wedding invitation and is understood that way.

Can the same guests be invited to more than one shower?

It's best to avoid it, beyond the wedding party and immediate family. When a bride has a hometown shower, a work shower and a shower in her new city, each guest list should mostly be different so no one feels they're being asked for gift after gift.

Bridesmaids and mothers who attend several showers aren't expected to bring a gift to each one.

Who is invited to the bridal shower versus the bachelorette party?

The bridal shower is the family party: mothers, grandmothers, aunts and family friends of every generation. The bachelorette is usually just the bride's friends and the wedding party.

Some guests are at both, and that's fine. It's thoughtful to keep the shower's activities welcoming for older relatives and save the wilder plans for the bachelorette.

10 questions

What goes on the invitation

A bridal shower invitation does two jobs: the front says whose shower it is, and the back carries the practical details and one line about gifts or the theme.

What should a bridal shower invitation say?

Who the shower honors (and the groom's name too, if you like), who is hosting, the date and time, the place with the full address, and how to RSVP and by when.

Then add the one practical sentence guests need: the registry, a recipe to bring, lingerie sizes, a theme or dress code, or that it's a surprise. Everything else is tone. The wording ideas page has ready lines for each.

How do you address bridal shower invitations?

Address the envelope to the guest or guests who are invited, by name, the same way you would a wedding invitation: "Ms. Grace Lee" or "Mrs. Ann Carter and Miss Ellie Carter". For a couples shower, list both partners.

Writing only the invited names avoids awkward questions about plus-ones or children.

Whose return address goes on a bridal shower invitation?

The host's, since the host sent the invitation and is collecting the replies. With several co-hosts, use the address of the person handling the RSVPs.

Is it OK to put registry information on a bridal shower invitation?

Yes. Unlike a wedding invitation, a shower is a gift-giving party, so a single line on the back of the card is customary: "Registry details on the couple's wedding website". A small insert card works too.

Keep it to one line and point to where guests can look, rather than listing stores.

How do you ask for gift cards or money on a bridal shower invitation?

Mention it once, gently, and leave guests free to choose. "A gift card or your company is perfect" or "Contributions to the honeymoon fund are welcome" reads as an option, not a demand.

A honeymoon fund or a cash registry listed on the couple's wedding website is often easier than putting money on the card at all, since guests who prefer to bring a wrapped gift can still do so.

How do you word a no-gifts or display shower?

For no gifts, say it plainly and warmly: "Your presence is the only gift needed". Some guests will still bring something small, and that's fine.

A display shower, common in parts of the South, sets the gifts out on tables for guests to see instead of opening them one by one. Say "Gifts will be displayed, not opened" so guests know to bring their gift wrapped with a card, or unwrapped with a tag.

How do you say no kids on a bridal shower invitation?

The clearest way is to address the envelope only to the adults who are invited. If you want to say it outright, keep it warm and short: "An adults-only afternoon · Thank you".

If someone asks to bring a child anyway, a kind, direct answer works best: explain that the shower is adults-only, and that you hope they can still come.

How do you share lingerie sizes on a shower invitation?

Put them on a small card tucked into the envelope, with a short line on the back of the invitation such as "Lingerie sizes are on the enclosed card". Texting them to each guest works too. Keep a lingerie shower to close friends, and many hosts hold it separately from the family shower.

How do bridal shower invitations with recipe cards work?

Each invitation goes out with a blank recipe card, and guests bring it back filled in with a favorite dish. The host collects them in a recipe box or binder for the bride.

Add a line such as "Please bring your favorite recipe on the enclosed card", and give guests who can't attend an address to mail theirs to.

Should the groom's name be on a bridal shower invitation?

It's optional. Many invitations honor only the bride, but naming the couple ("honoring Emma Lawson, bride-to-be of James Carter") helps guests from the groom's side and from different circles know whose wedding it is. On a couples shower, both names belong on the card.

8 questions

Couples, surprise, virtual & other showers

Not every shower is a Saturday luncheon. These are the variations people ask about most, and what each one changes on the invitation.

What's the difference between a bridal shower and a couples shower?

A bridal shower traditionally honors the bride and is attended mostly by women; a couples shower, sometimes called a co-ed or wedding shower, honors both partners and invites friends and family of all kinds, often with their partners.

Couples showers lean casual: a backyard barbecue, a stock-the-bar party or a game night. Say "Couples welcome" or name both guests on the envelope so people know partners are invited.

How do you plan a surprise bridal shower invitation?

Ask guests to reply to the host, never to the bride, and say clearly on the invitation that it's a surprise, with an arrival time well before hers. Mention parking if cars in the driveway would give it away.

Send invitations by mail or to personal email rather than group chats she's in, and ask a trusted friend to get her there on time.

What should go on a virtual bridal shower invitation?

The date and a time with the time zone, how guests join (a link sent later or on the couple's website), about how long it runs, and where gifts should ship. Ask guests to send gifts ahead so the bride can open them on camera.

A shower by mail is a gentler version for far-flung family: guests mail cards, recipes and gifts over a week, and the bride opens them together on a video call.

How does an office bridal shower work?

Keep it short and simple: cake and coffee in a break room or conference room, a card everyone can sign, and an optional group gift. Hold it during work hours so nobody gives up an evening.

Because co-workers aren't usually invited to the wedding, an office shower doesn't follow the wedding-invitation rule, and contributions should always be voluntary.

Should you have a bridal shower before a destination wedding?

Many couples do, especially when the wedding guest list is small. A hometown shower lets friends who can't travel celebrate, and guests usually understand that they aren't invited to the wedding itself.

Say on the invitation that the wedding is abroad or small, so nobody waits for a wedding invitation that isn't coming.

Is it OK to have a bridal shower for a second wedding?

Yes. Second-time brides often skip the household registry, so the shower may have a theme instead: a honeymoon shower, a wine or recipe shower, or simply a party with no gifts. Invite people who are new to her life rather than repeating the first shower's list.

How do you word a shower for two brides?

Name both brides equally and in whichever order they prefer: "Please join us in honoring Rosa & Imani". Everything else is the same as any shower, including the registry line, the RSVP and the theme.

If each bride's friends are throwing a separate shower, each invitation can honor its own bride while still naming her partner.

What is an open house bridal shower?

A come-and-go shower held over a few hours, often in a home or a church hall, where guests drop in, greet the bride, see the gifts on display and leave when they like. It suits large families and busy weekends.

Put the full window on the invitation, such as "Open house · Stop by anytime from two to five", so guests don't all arrive at once.

5 questions

Replying & declining

For guests: how to answer the invitation gracefully, whether or not you can go.

How do you respond to a bridal shower invitation?

Reply the way the invitation asks, by phone, text, email or card, and by the RSVP date. A short, warm reply is plenty: "Thank you for inviting me! I'll be there and can't wait to celebrate Emma."

How do you politely decline a bridal shower invitation?

Reply promptly, thank the host, give a brief reason if you like, and send your best wishes to the bride: "Thank you so much for the invitation. I'm sorry I can't be there that weekend, but I'll be thinking of Emma and sending a little something her way."

Declining by email or text is fine when that's how the host asked for replies. There's no need for a long explanation.

Should you send a gift if you can't attend the bridal shower?

It's thoughtful but not required. Many guests who can't attend send a card, and close friends and family often send a gift from the registry so it arrives before the shower.

If you're also attending the wedding, a single gift for the wedding is perfectly acceptable.

What should a host do when guests don't reply?

A day or two after the RSVP date, send a short, friendly text or call: "Just checking whether you can make Emma's shower on Saturday, so I can give the restaurant a count." Most non-replies are invitations that got lost in a busy week.

Can you bring a guest to a bridal shower?

Only if the invitation includes one. The names on the envelope are the guests who are invited. If you're unsure, ask the host rather than the bride, and accept the answer gracefully.

2 questions

After the shower

Two small things make the shower feel finished: thank-you notes and a few shared photos.

When should the bride send thank-you notes after a bridal shower?

Within two to three weeks is a common goal, and certainly before the wedding. Assign someone at the shower to write down each gift and its giver as the bride opens them, so the notes can be specific.

The hosts deserve a thank-you too, ideally with a small gift or flowers.

Should the host share photos after the shower?

It's a nice touch. A shared album or a handful of pictures sent to guests the next day, especially to those who couldn't come, lets everyone feel part of the celebration.
