Two designs, four colors.

The original eight, kept on purpose

These are the first letterhead samples the site ever offered: two layouts — a centred church-style masthead and a company header with a rule — each in blue, green, red and purple. They are plain .dot Word templates with no embedded artwork, which is exactly why some people still prefer them: nothing to replace, nothing to resize, just a coloured heading and a page to type on.

If you want a design with a drawn mark, a real footer and a Google Docs version, every category in the current library has those, and the examples page walks through twenty-six of them with a note on what each layout is for. These eight stay because they still work and people still ask for them.

.dot and .dotx — what the difference means for you

These eight are .dot files, the template format Word used before 2007. Every current version of Word still opens them — 2010 through Microsoft 365 and Word for Mac included — but you will see a “Compatibility Mode” label in the title bar, and a few newer features such as SmartArt are switched off while it is on. For a letterhead that is a heading and a page of text, none of that matters. If you would rather have the modern format, choose File → Save As and pick Word Template (.dotx); the layout is unchanged. Everything in the newer categories is already .dotx.

Which colour to pick

Blue is the safe default for any business letter and prints reliably on a mono laser. Green reads as civic or community, which is why the church-style layout was drawn in it first. Red is the loudest of the four and suits a notice or an announcement more than routine correspondence; purple is the one to reach for when the letter is personal rather than official. All four are the same file with the heading recoloured, so nothing else changes between them.
