Reading the lines

The badminton court is a doubles court with a singles court drawn inside it. The outer sidelines are the doubles boundary; 0.46 m in from each is the singles sideline. Across the court, 1.98 m from the net on each side, is the short service line — a serve has to carry past it. And 0.76 m inside each back boundary is the doubles long service line, which only matters for the serve: a doubles serve that lands beyond it is out, even though that back alley is in play for the rest of the rally.

The centre line runs from the short service line to the back boundary on each side and splits the service area into a right and a left service court. Everything about serving hangs on those four boxes, which is why they have their own labelled sheet on the diagrams page.

What are the dimensions of a badminton court in feet?
44 feet long by 20 feet wide for doubles, and 44 by 17 feet for singles — the singles court simply drops the 1 ft 6 in alley down each side. In metres that is 13.4 × 6.1 m and 13.4 × 5.18 m. The net divides it into two 22-ft halves, and the short service line is 6 ft 6 in from the net on each side.
Is the singles court a different size from the doubles court?
Same length, different width and a different serving box. Singles uses the inner sidelines (5.18 m / 17 ft wide) and serves all the way to the back boundary. Doubles uses the outer sidelines (6.1 m / 20 ft) but serves only to the long service line 0.76 m (2 ft 6 in) inside the back line — so the doubles serving box is wider and shorter than the singles one. Once the serve is in, doubles rallies use the whole court.
How high is a badminton net?
1.55 m (5 ft 1 in) at the posts and 1.524 m (5 ft) at the centre, where it sags very slightly. The net itself is 0.76 m (2 ft 6 in) deep and the posts stand on the doubles sidelines, whether the game is singles or doubles.
Is a badminton court the same size as a pickleball court?
Yes — a pickleball court is 20 × 44 ft, exactly a badminton doubles court, because pickleball was invented on one in 1965. The differences are the net (34 in at the centre for pickleball against 5 ft for badminton), the 7-ft non-volley zone instead of a short service line, and no singles lines. That is why badminton lines are the easiest way to lay out a pickleball court in a gym.
Can you fit a badminton court on a basketball court?
Comfortably. A 44 × 20 ft badminton court fits crosswise on a 50-ft-wide basketball floor, and gyms typically mark three of them side by side down an 84-ft high-school court — or four on a 94-ft college floor if you accept less than the recommended 2 m between courts.
How much room do you need for an indoor badminton court?
Beyond the 13.4 × 6.1 m lines, allow about 2 m clear at the sides and ends and at least 9 m of clear height — the BWF wants 12 m for its own events — because a high clear is played well above a gym's lights. A single court therefore wants roughly 17.5 × 10 m of floor.
What size is a backyard or outdoor badminton court?
The regulation 44 × 20 ft is the target if you have it — a garden net set is usually 20 ft wide for that reason — but nothing in casual play breaks if you shrink it to fit the lawn. Keep the net at 5 ft, mark a short service line about 6½ ft from it, and play the doubles boundary all the way round.
Are the lines part of the court?
Yes. Lines are 40 mm (about 1½ in) wide and count as part of the area they bound, so a shuttle landing on the back line or the sideline is in. On a properly painted court the outside edge of the boundary line is the 13.4 × 6.1 m measurement.
