Forty feet, and why the stake leans

Forty feet between stakes has been the standard since the sport was codified a century ago, and it is the number to build to even if half your players will pitch from 30: the 30-ft class simply steps up to a foul line 27 feet from the far stake, on a platform that extends toward the middle. Build the platforms 6 feet long on both sides of each pit and both distances work.

The stake leans three inches toward the pitcher — about twelve degrees — so that a shoe arriving on a flat arc wraps it rather than bouncing off, and it stands 14 to 15 inches out of the pit so a ringer can be seen from the other end. The pit itself is the part people skimp on: a full 36 × 72 in of moist clay or damp sand stops a shoe where it lands, which is what makes ringers stick and keeps shoes from skipping into the yard.

How far apart are horseshoe stakes?
Forty feet, stake to stake, under NHPA rules — the men's pitching distance. Women, juniors and seniors pitch from 30 feet at the same pits, using a foul line 27 feet from the far stake. Backyard sets are often played at 30 or even 20 feet, but 40 is regulation.
How big is a horseshoe pit?
Between 31 and 36 inches wide and 43 to 72 inches long, with the stake in the centre. Bigger is better: a full 36 × 72 in pit of clay or sand catches every shoe. The pit should sit a little below the pitching platforms so shoes do not bounce out.
How tall is a horseshoe stake and does it lean?
The stake stands 14 to 15 inches above the pit surface and leans about 3 inches — roughly 12 degrees — toward the opposite stake. It is a 1-inch steel rod set firmly enough not to move when hit.
Where is the foul line in horseshoes?
Thirty-seven feet from the opposite stake — that is, 3 feet in front of the stake you are standing beside — for 40-ft pitchers, and 27 feet for 30-ft pitchers. Your foot may not pass it before the shoe is released.
How much space do I need for horseshoes?
About 48 feet long and 6 feet wide for the two pits and the platforms between them, plus a few feet behind each pit for a backstop and somewhere for the shoes that miss. If the yard is short, keep the pits full size and pitch from 30 feet.
What size are regulation horseshoes?
No more than 2 lb 10 oz, 7⅝ inches long and 7¼ inches wide, with an opening no wider than 3½ inches. Most sets are 2 lb 8 oz. The opening is what a ringer has to clear.
