On banquet night

How to run a basketball team awards banquet

Basketball rosters are small — twelve to fifteen players — which makes the banquet easier to run well than football’s forty. The format that works: eat, a two-minute season recap from the coach, then every player called up one at a time with a single sentence and a certificate. Keep the statistical awards in the middle and the Coaches Award last; the room stays for it.

Decide the whole list before you open the generator — one award per player — and work down it. The design, program name, date and coach’s name stay filled in between downloads, so each certificate is a name, an award and a click. Download in the order you will call players up and the printed stack is your speaking order. Programs that name a JV and a varsity MVP simply run the form twice with the level in the program field.

Print on 80–100 lb card stock, keep the certificates flat in a folder until the night, and put the season in the date field — “2025–26 Season” — so the certificate still reads correctly if the banquet moves a week. A church league or a rec program that hands out awards at the last game rather than a banquet can print the whole set in one sitting the night before.

What basketball awards should a team banquet include?

The core is MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Most Improved, and the Coaches Award, and most programs add a statistical trio — Top Scorer, Rebounding Leader, Playmaker for assists. Youth and middle-school teams then round it out with Hustle, Sixth Man, Sportsmanship and Team Spirit so a 12-player roster all gets called up. All fourteen are presets here.

Is there a basketball MVP certificate?

Yes — MVP is the first preset, written around all-round contribution on the court and off it, and it is the hero award on the Hardwood design. If your program names an Offensive and a Defensive MVP, Defensive Player of the Year is the preset for the second one, or type either title in the custom mode.

What is the Sixth Man Award?

The best player who does not start — the first substitute in, whose energy changes the game off the bench. It is one of basketball's oldest awards (the NBA has given it since 1983) and the one youth coaches most often use to recognize a non-starter honestly rather than with a participation certificate.

Do these work for a rec league, AAU, and high school?

The presets avoid level-specific wording, so a rec-league coach prints Hustle and Team Spirit for eight-year-olds while a high school program prints MVP and Team Captain on the Classic or Bold design with the athletic director's signature. The program name at the bottom is a form field, so it reads correctly for a school, a club or a church league.
