A good invitation line does one job. The front of the card says what the party is; the back carries the date, the place, the RSVP and one practical sentence. That sentence is where most of the lines below belong: the dress code, the gift limit, the dish to bring, or a joke that sets the tone. For a work party, see the holiday party invitation emails as well.

Frequently asked questions

What should a Christmas party invitation say?
Five things: who is hosting, what the party is, the date and time, the address, and how to RSVP and by when. Then one line that changes what guests do, such as a dress code, a gift limit or what to bring. Everything else is tone.
How do I word a gift exchange on the invitation?
Name the game and the limit in one line, for example "White elephant · $25 limit · Three steals", so nobody arrives with a gift that is far more or less than the rest. The gift exchange lines above are written that way.
How do I ask guests to bring a dish without sounding demanding?
Make it an invitation, not an assignment: "Bring a dish to share if you like", or assign by last name (A to M sides, N to Z desserts) so the table balances. The potluck and cookie lines above cover both.
Is it better to say Christmas party or holiday party?
For a workplace or a mixed group, holiday party is the usual choice; for family, friends, church or a themed night, Christmas party is fine. The office lines and emails here say holiday party for that reason.
