Resignation Letter Due to Relocation

A move is the easiest resignation to write and the one most often botched by over-explaining. The letter inside these templates names the move once — where and when, and the one-clause reason (a spouse's job, family, a planned move) — resigns with a date, thanks the team specifically, and leaves a single door open: if remote is ever possible, you'd welcome the conversation. Printed in full below; free in Word and Google Docs.

Relocation — Classic Rust

The classic centered letterhead carrying the relocation letter — the move stated as certain, a remote-work door left open.

Relocation — Contemporary Teal

A left-aligned contemporary header carrying the relocation letter — the move stated as certain, a remote-work door left open.

Relocation — Monogram Navy

The initials-emblem letterhead carrying the relocation letter — the move stated as certain, a remote-work door left open.

[Company Address]

Dear [Manager Name],

Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my position as [Job Title] at [Company Name]. My family is relocating to [City, State] in [Month Year][my spouse has accepted a position there / to be closer to family / a move we have been planning] — and my last day of employment will be [Last Day].

This was a difficult decision, because I have valued my time here. [One specific: a project you were proud of, a skill you built, a team you will miss.] I am grateful for the support you and the team have given me.

Between now and [Last Day] I will finish my current work, document my responsibilities, and help train whoever takes them on. If a remote arrangement for this role is ever something the company would consider, I would welcome that conversation — but I understand if it is not.

Thank you for everything during my time at [Company Name]. I hope we stay in touch, and I wish you and the team continued success.

Sincerely,

Jordan A. Bennett

What to say

What a relocation resignation letter should say.

Managers read a relocation letter for three things, and none of them is the story of the move:

  • The date and the destination. ’My family is relocating to Denver in January; my last day will be [date].’ Certain and dated — ’considering a move’ is not a resignation.
  • One clause of reason. A spouse’s job, aging parents, a long-planned move. It makes the departure credible and closes the question; it doesn’t need a paragraph.
  • The transition. What you’ll finish, document, and hand off — and whether you can help remotely after you go, if that’s true.
  • The remote question, asked once. ’If a remote arrangement is ever something the company would consider, I’d welcome that conversation.’ It costs nothing and it occasionally keeps the job.

Moving for a new job rather than with one? The new-job letter is the fit. Military spouses: the military letter covers the service member; this page covers the spouse. And the relocation cover letter handles the other side of the move.

Three steps

Fill it in and send.

  1. Download a template — the letter inside is written for a move.
  2. Fill the brackets: new city, month, the one-clause reason, last day, what you’ll hand off.
  3. Decide whether to leave the remote-work line in. Export a PDF, tell your manager first, then send it.
Questions

Relocation resignation FAQ

How do I write a resignation letter for relocation?
Resign with a date in the first sentence and name the move — city and month — with one clause of reason. Thank the team for something specific, describe the handoff, and, if you'd genuinely take it, ask once whether remote work is possible. Four short paragraphs; the letter above is the template.
Should I ask about working remotely in a relocation resignation letter?
If you'd say yes to it, ask — once, in a sentence, near the end. The worst answer is no, and you've already resigned. Don't make the letter conditional on it; resign cleanly and leave the door open.
How much notice should I give when relocating?
As much as the move allows: two weeks is the floor, four is a kindness when you've known for months. If you're following a spouse's start date, say so — 'my family is relocating in January' explains a longer or shorter runway.
Do I need to say where I'm moving?
No, but it helps — a named city makes the move real and ends speculation. Skip it only if privacy matters to you.
Is a relocation letter different for a military spouse move?
Only in the reason clause: 'my spouse has received PCS orders to [base]' is a complete and well-understood explanation, and many employers have transfer or remote policies for exactly that case — ask.
Can I copy this letter?
Yes — copy the text above or download it in Word or Google Docs. Free, no signup.
