Volleyball Court Dimensions

The indoor court is 18 × 9 metres at every level — what changes is the net. One measured sheet for the FIVB / USAV / NCAA court, one for the NFHS 60 × 30 ft high-school court, and separate sheets for the two courts that really are different: beach and sitting volleyball. Net heights by age are in the table.

Since the court doesn’t change, this is the table that matters. Heights are measured at the centre of the net; the two ends may be up to 2 cm higher.

The three lines and the space around them

A volleyball court is a rectangle with three lines across it. The centre line runs under the net and splits the 18 m into two 9 × 9 m sides. Three metres back from it on each side is the attack line — the “10-foot line” in American gyms — which is the limit a back-row player may cross to hit the ball above the net. Everything behind it is the back zone; the service zone is the full 9 m width behind each end line.

The number people forget is the free zone. The ball is playable well outside the lines, so the rules want at least 3 m clear on every side and 7 m overhead — which turns a 9 × 18 court into a 15 × 24 m room. The sheets draw that zone as a dashed box so the planning number is on the page with the playing one.

What are the dimensions of a volleyball court in feet and metres?
An indoor volleyball court is 18 metres long by 9 metres wide — 59 feet by 29 feet 6 inches — split into two 9 × 9 m halves by the net. The attack line is 3 m (9 ft 10 in) from the centre line on each side. High-school rules in the United States round it to 60 × 30 feet with a 10-foot attack line, which is what most school gyms are painted to.
How big is a beach volleyball court compared with indoor?
A beach court is 16 × 8 m (52 ft 6 in × 26 ft 3 in) — two metres shorter and a metre narrower than the 18 × 9 m indoor court, with no centre line and no attack line. The net heights are the same, 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women. The beach court was the full 18 × 9 m until 2001, when the FIVB shrank it to make two-player rallies last longer.
What are the high school volleyball court dimensions?
Under NFHS rules the court is 60 feet by 30 feet, with the attack line 10 feet from the centre line and a minimum 6-foot free zone around it; the metric 59 ft × 29 ft 6 in court is also permitted. Girls play on a 7 ft 4⅛ in net and boys on 7 ft 11⅝ in. Texas (UIL) and other state associations follow the same court.
How high is a volleyball net for each age group?
2.43 m (7 ft 11⅝ in) for men and boys 15 and over; 2.24 m (7 ft 4⅛ in) for women, girls 13 and over and boys 13–14; 2.13 m (7 ft) for 12-and-under; and 1.98 m (6 ft 6 in) for 10-and-under under USA Volleyball's junior table. Sitting volleyball uses 1.15 m for men and 1.05 m for women. The net is measured at the centre, and the ends may be no more than 2 cm higher.
How much space do you need around a volleyball court?
At least 3 m of free zone on every side and 7 m of clear height — so a 24 × 15 m footprint for one indoor court. FIVB World and Official competitions want more: 5 m at the sides, 6.5 m behind the end lines and 12.5 m overhead. NFHS asks for a 6-foot minimum, which is why a school gym can fit a court on a basketball floor.
Does a volleyball court fit on a basketball court?
Yes — that is how most school gyms work. A high-school basketball court is 84 × 50 ft and a volleyball court is 60 × 30 ft, so it fits lengthwise down the middle with about 12 ft spare at each end and 10 ft at each side. On a 94 × 50 ft college or NBA floor, two volleyball courts also fit sideways across the width for practice, though with tight free zones.
What is the difference between a middle school and high school volleyball court?
Usually nothing about the court — middle schools play on the same 60 × 30 ft lines. The difference is the net: many middle-school and junior leagues use the USA Volleyball 12-and-under height of 7 ft (2.13 m), moving up to 7 ft 4⅛ in for 13-and-over. Check your state association, as some play junior high on the full girls' height.
How big is a sitting volleyball court?
10 metres long by 6 metres wide, with the attack line 2 m from the centre line and a net 7 m long and 0.8 m deep, set at 1.15 m for men and 1.05 m for women. It has been the Paralympic court since 1980. A 3 m free zone is still recommended around it.
