Frequently asked questions
When does Hong Kong's financial year run?
1 April to 31 March. The government's financial year (the one the Budget covers) and the Inland Revenue Department's year of assessment for salaries tax and profits tax both use it, so the 2026/27 year runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Do companies in Hong Kong have to use April–March?
No. A company can choose its own accounting year-end, and many close on 31 December or 31 March. Profits tax is still charged by year of assessment (April–March); the accounts that end within a year of assessment are the ones assessed for it. This calendar defaults to April but you can start it in any month.
Which holidays are marked?
Hong Kong's general holidays as the government publishes them — Lunar New Year, Easter, Ching Ming, the Birthday of the Buddha, Tuen Ng, Mid-Autumn, Chung Yeung, National Day, Christmas and the rest — including the substitute days named when a holiday falls on a Sunday.
Who uses a Hong Kong financial year calendar?
Accountants and bookkeepers working to the 31 March year-end, payroll and HR teams planning around the year of assessment, finance staff reporting a Hong Kong entity to a parent with a different year, and anyone filing a tax return who wants the whole year on one page.
