Why hockey coaches draw more than anyone

A hockey practice is forty-five minutes of ice time that costs real money, so it is planned to the minute on paper before anyone skates — which is why the four-rinks-per-page sheet exists, and why coaches ask for rink diagrams small enough to fit a pocket. The half-ice sheet is the other half of the habit: with three or four groups sharing the surface, most drills live in one zone.

The builder puts both teams on the ice at once because that is how positions are taught — not as a list, but as who stands where at the draw.

Is there a hockey rink diagram with positions?
Build Custom does it. It lines up both teams for a centre-ice face-off — home as O's, visitors as X's — with centre, wings, defence and goaltender each labeled, and every marker can carry a player's name. On the half-ice sheet the face-off moves to the near circle so the alignment matches a defensive-zone draw.
Which sheet do I use for practice plans and drills?
The four-per-page drill cards for the plan itself — one drill per rink with two ruled lines beneath for the name and coaching points — and the half-ice sheet when a single drill needs room to draw. USA Hockey practice plans are laid out the same way, which is why coaches ask for 5 × 7 rink diagrams.
Is there a labeled hockey rink diagram?
Yes — a sheet that names every zone, line and marking on an NHL rink: the three zones from the defending team's view, goal lines, blue lines, centre red line, the five face-off circles and four neutral-zone dots, the crease, the slot, the trapezoid, the hash marks, the referee's crease and where the benches and penalty boxes sit. It is the sheet to hand a new parent.
Which rink is the blank — NHL or Olympic?
The NHL 200 × 85 ft rink, because the AHL, ECHL, NCAA and every USA Hockey rink use it. The IIHF 60 × 30 m Olympic sheet is on the dimensions page with its measurements; the only marking a coach would miss on it is the trapezoid, which international rules do not draw.
Can I add my team's logo?

Are the diagrams to scale?
Yes. Every mark is placed from NHL Rule 1: 28-ft corners, goal lines 11 ft from the boards, blue lines 75 ft in, 15-ft circles with the end dots 20 ft off the goal line and 44 ft apart, neutral dots 5 ft off the blue lines, the 8 × 4½ ft crease with its 6-ft arc, and the 22/28-ft trapezoid.
