What school hiring committees look for in the letter.

A teaching application letter is read differently than a corporate one — usually by a committee, usually in a stack, always with the license question first. The letter that survives the stack does four things:

  • Answers the license question immediately. State, certificate type, endorsements, and — if you’re finishing a program — exam dates. It’s the first filter and the template puts it in the first sentence.
  • Shows a classroom, not adjectives. “Structured routines, high expectations” lands only when it’s followed by what that looked like on a Tuesday — and one number: growth, referrals, attendance, family engagement.
  • Names the school like you chose it. The dual-language strand, the PBIS rollout, the robotics club that needs a sponsor. Committees can tell a district blast from a chosen school in one sentence.
  • Offers the building something beyond the classroom. A club, a coaching certification, family-night experience. Schools hire colleagues, not just instructors.

Timing beats polish: most districts screen on a rolling basis once postings open in spring. A strong letter submitted in week one outperforms a perfect one in week five.

Who do I address a teacher cover letter to?
The principal by name when the posting names one, or 'Dear Hiring Committee' — most school hiring runs through a committee, so that greeting is accurate rather than generic. For district-level pools, 'Dear [District] Human Resources' works. Avoid 'To Whom It May Concern' — a letter about your communication skills shouldn't open with a phrase nobody says.
How do I show results if my school doesn't publish data?
Use classroom-level evidence you can honestly state: 'moved my reading groups an average of 1.4 levels,' 'cut office referrals from my room by half,' '92% of families attended conferences after I switched to flexible scheduling.' Committees trust classroom-scale numbers more than school-wide scores anyway — those are yours; the building's rating isn't.

Student teaching is real experience — write it like a job. Name the placement school and grade, the units you planned and taught solo, your mentor's assessment language, and one measurable moment ('my small-group intervention brought four of five students to benchmark'). Add your certification status and exam dates. Every principal hiring a new teacher knows what a strong student-teaching semester looks like; show them one.
Can I send the same letter to every school in a district?
Keep the core and swap the closing paragraph per school — the specific program, team, or community detail.
