Part-Time Job Resignation Letters

Part-time jobs run on the schedule, so the resignation speaks schedule: your last scheduled day named, your remaining shifts worked, and a hand with coverage where you can give it. Whether it's retail, a restaurant, or the campus job that funded your degree, these templates carry a letter that leaves the roster intact and the reference warm \u2014 because first jobs and side jobs write references too.

Roster courtesy

Part-time letters live and die by the schedule.

Everything a part-time manager cares about in your resignation fits in three commitments:

  • Work the shifts you’re posted for — the schedule is already printed; honoring it is nine-tenths of leaving well in hourly work.
  • Name the last scheduled day — not a vague date. In shift work, the roster is the calendar that counts.
  • Offer what flexibility you honestly have — helping cover or train during the transition, where your availability allows. Don’t overpromise around school or the new job.
  • Two weeks still applies — it’s the norm for hourly roles too, usually spanning two schedule postings. More is kind during holiday rushes; students leaving for a semester should tell managers as soon as the term dates are known.

One thing worth taking seriously even in a casual job: the manager you’re leaving may be your first professional reference — asked to confirm you were reliable, showed up, and left properly. This letter is you leaving properly, in writing.

Last shifts

Leaving the roster right.

  1. Check the posted schedule and pick a last day at the end of a posting period.
  2. Tell your manager before or after a shift — in person beats a text every time.
  3. Hand over the letter; work every remaining shift like a reference depends on it.
  4. Return the uniform, keys, or badge on the last day — the small stuff is the exit interview.

Part-time resignation FAQ

Do I really need a formal letter for a part-time job?
It's the move that costs five minutes and quietly upgrades you. Plenty of hourly resignations happen by text — which is exactly why a short, dated letter stands out: it gives the manager a document for the file, protects you on the notice-was-given question, and marks you as someone who handles things properly. For students especially, this letter plus two well-worked weeks converts a job into a reference. The letter isn't formality for its own sake; it's the cheapest professionalism you'll ever buy.
How much notice is fair for shift work?
Two weeks, translated into roster terms: enough to span the next schedule posting so the manager plans around you rather than scrambles. Give more during peak seasons — holiday retail, summer restaurant rushes — where replacing you mid-surge is genuinely hard. Seasonal and school-year jobs have a natural end date; confirming it in writing a few weeks out counts fully as notice. The one discourtesy hourly managers never forget is the no-show quit.
What if I'm leaving because school is starting?
Say so early and warmly — it's the most sympathetic reason in part-time work, and managers who employ students plan for it every year. Tell them as soon as your term dates are firm, put the last day in the letter, and ask the question that keeps doors open: whether you can come back next summer or over breaks. Many part-time employers treat returning students as their best hires — a good goodbye now is literally next year's job.
Can I quit a part-time job by text or do I have to do it in person?
The order that serves you: say it in person (or by call if you genuinely won't overlap with your manager), then hand over or send the letter the same day. Text-only resignations are common in hourly work and managers privately grade them accordingly. If the workplace is genuinely text-based — some small shops run entirely on group chat — then a respectful message plus this letter as an attached PDF is a perfectly professional version of the same sequence.
