Every football field is 120 × 53⅓ yards — 360 × 160 feet. What differs between the NFL, college and high school is what's painted inside it: where the hash marks fall, how wide the goal posts are, where the numbers sit. One measured sheet per level, plus 8-man, Canadian and both flag-football fields.

NFL vs. college vs. high school

If you only remember one row, make it the hash marks. They decide where the ball is spotted after a play near the sideline, which is why the college and pro games feel different in the middle of the field.

Reading a football field

Start with the two goal lines, 100 yards apart, and the 10-yard end zone behind each. Every 5 yards a line crosses the full width; every single yard a 2-ft mark sits just inside each sideline and again at the two hash lines. The numbers — 6 ft tall, 4 ft wide — run every 10 yards, and each row is painted to read upright from its own sideline, which is why one row is upside down from the air.

The hash marks are the piece worth understanding. When a play ends outside them, the ball comes back in to the nearest hash for the next snap. The narrower the hashes, the closer to the middle every play starts — which is the whole reason the NFL squeezed its own to the width of the goal posts in 1972, and why a college quarterback sees so much more “wide side” of the field.

What are the dimensions of a football field?
An American football field is 120 yards long by 53⅓ yards wide — 360 by 160 feet — including the two 10-yard end zones. Between the goal lines it is 100 yards (300 feet). In metric that is 109.7 m by 48.8 m, and the whole field covers 57,600 square feet, a little over 1.3 acres. Those numbers are the same in the NFL, college and high school.
Are high school, college and NFL football fields the same size?
The outline is identical at all three levels. What changes is the marking inside it: the hash marks are 18 ft 6 in apart in the NFL, 40 ft apart in college and 53 ft 4 in apart in high school; NFL yard numbers sit 12 yd off the sideline versus 9 yd for college and high school; high-school goal posts are 23 ft 4 in wide against 18 ft 6 in; and the team area runs between the 32s in the NFL but the 25s elsewhere. The comparison table above lists each one.
How far apart are the hash marks on a football field?
NFL hash marks are 70 ft 9 in in from each sideline, which leaves 18 ft 6 in between them — the same width as the goal posts. College hash marks are 60 ft in from each sideline and 40 ft apart. High-school hash marks divide the 160-ft width into thirds, so they are 53 ft 4 in in from each sideline and 53 ft 4 in apart. Texas high schools are the exception and use the college spacing.
How big is a flag football field?
It depends on the format. NFL FLAG (5-on-5) plays on a field 30 yards wide and 70 yards long including two 10-yard end zones, with no-run zones 5 yards in front of each goal line and either side of midfield. The 7-on-7 game used by NFHS girls' flag football, the FHSAA and NIRSA is 40 yards wide and 80 yards between the goal lines, plus 10-yard end zones, with a zone line every 20 yards.
How big is an 8-man football field?
Forty yards wide — 13⅓ yards narrower than an 11-man field — with 10-yard end zones. Most states keep the full 100 yards between the goal lines; the NFHS 8-player rules also allow an 80-yard field, and a few leagues use it. Six-man and nine-man football play on the same 40-yard width.
How big is a Canadian football field?
Bigger in every direction: 110 yards between the goal lines, 65 yards wide, with 20-yard end zones, for 150 yards overall. The goal posts stand on the goal line rather than the end line, the centre line is the 55, and the CFL moved its hash marks in from 24 to 28 yards off the sideline in 2022 — amateur Canadian football still uses 24.
Is a football field bigger than a soccer field?
Usually not. A regulation soccer pitch can be anywhere from 100 to 130 yards long and 50 to 100 yards wide, and the FIFA international standard is 110–120 by 70–80 yards — so most soccer fields are wider than a football field's 53⅓ yards and about as long. A football field fits inside a full-size soccer pitch, which is why the two often share a stadium.
What are the dimensions of a football field in meters?
109.73 m long including the end zones, 91.44 m between the goal lines, and 48.77 m wide. Each end zone is 9.14 m deep, and the crossbar is 3.05 m above the ground. The area is about 5,350 square metres.
How big are football goal posts?
The crossbar is 10 ft above the ground at every level. In the NFL and college the uprights are 18 ft 6 in apart; in high school they are 23 ft 4 in apart. NFL uprights rise 35 ft above the crossbar. At all three levels the posts stand centred on the end line, at the back of the end zone.
