Shuffleboard Table Dimensions and Sizes

A regulation shuffleboard table is 22 feet long with a 20-inch playfield — but almost nobody's basement has a 26-foot wall, which is why tables come in 9, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 feet too. Shuffleboard table sizes and the room each needs

The playfield is about 16 inches shorter than the cabinet on every size. Room is the table plus 2 ft at each end as a minimum and 3 ft to play comfortably.

Why the playfield is shorter than the table

A shuffleboard table is a long maple board floating in a cradle. At each end the cradle wraps around a gutter that catches the weights that go off — the drop that makes a hanger possible — and that housing is where the 16 inches go. So the 12-foot table on the showroom floor plays 10 ft 8 in, and the regulation 22-footer plays 20 ft 8 in. Manufacturers also build most home tables 16 inches wide rather than the regulation 20, which keeps the cabinet under 30 inches and through a standard door.

The scoring lines do not scale with the table. Whatever the length, the 3-line is 6 inches from the end, the 2-line 12 inches, and the foul line 6 feet — which is why a short table is a harder table: the same 6-foot scoring zone is a bigger share of a shorter board, and there is less runway to control speed on a waxed surface.

What are regulation shuffleboard table dimensions?
Twenty-two feet long with a playing surface 20 inches wide — the Table Shuffleboard Association standard used in tournaments. The cabinet is 22 ft; the playfield inside it is about 20 ft 8 in, because the cradle and gutters take roughly 8 inches at each end. The surface sits 30 to 32 inches off the floor, and the whole table is 24 to 32 inches wide.
How long is a 12 foot shuffleboard table's playing surface?
About 10 ft 8 in. On every size the playfield is roughly 16 inches shorter than the cabinet, so a 9-ft table plays 7 ft 8 in, a 14-ft table 12 ft 8 in and a 16-ft table 14 ft 8 in. That is the number that matters for how the game feels; the cabinet length is the number that matters for the room.
How much room do I need for a shuffleboard table?
Table length plus 2 feet at each end as a minimum, 3 feet to be comfortable, by 6 to 7 feet wide. So a 12-ft table wants at least 16 × 6 ft and ideally 18 × 7 ft; a 14-ft table 18 × 6 ft; the 22-ft regulation table 26 × 6 ft. Players stand at the ends, so give up side clearance before end clearance — a table can sit about a foot from a side wall.
Where are the scoring lines on a shuffleboard table?
Measured from the end of the playfield: the 3-line is 6 inches in and the 2-line 12 inches in, so the 3 and 2 zones are each 6 inches deep. The 1 zone runs from the 2-line all the way back to the foul line, 6 feet from the end. A weight touching a line scores the lower zone; one hanging over the end without falling is a hanger and scores 4.
What is the foul line for?
Each end has a foul line 6 feet from the end of the playfield. In regulation play a weight has to cross the foul line at the far end — the one that bounds the scoring zones — or it is taken off the board before the next shot. The near foul line marks the same distance from the shooter's end; on short home tables some house rules use it instead.
What size shuffleboard table should I buy?
The longest one the room takes with 2 to 3 feet spare at each end. Twelve and 14 feet are the best-selling home sizes because they fit a normal basement or game room and still let you play position; 9 feet suits an apartment or a bar corner and plays fast; 16 to 20 feet feel like the real thing; 22 feet is regulation and needs a 26-ft wall.
How wide is the playing surface, and does it matter?
Sixteen inches on most home tables, 18 on some club tables and 20 inches on regulation tables. Wider boards give more room to play around a blocker and are what tournament players practise on; the extra width also adds to the overall cabinet, so check the table's total width — 24 to 32 inches — against your doorway.
Is this the same as the outdoor shuffleboard court?
No. The court game is played outdoors on a 52 × 6 ft painted surface with cues and 6-in discs, scoring 10, 8 and 7 to 75. This page is the table game — indoors, hand-thrown weights on a waxed wooden board, scoring 1, 2, 3 and hangers to 15 or 21. The court has its own dimensions page.
