Hours toward the requirement

Internship Timesheet Template

Internships run on a number \u2014 120 hours, 240 hours, a semester's worth \u2014 and this sheet keeps that number in view. Each day logs time in, time out, and what the intern actually worked on; the summary shows hours this week, hours to date, and hours remaining against the required total. Signature lines for the site supervisor and the academic coordinator make it the document the school accepts.

Three formats

The intern log, three ways.

Excel — counts toward the total

Daily hours compute from clock times; enter the required total and prior hours, and the sheet shows hours to date and hours remaining every week.

Worth knowing

The work-performed column is the point.

Hours are the requirement; the description is the internship. A log that reads “Tuesday — 6.0 — filing” for twelve weeks tells a future employer, a reference writer, and the intern themselves that nothing happened. Two specific lines a day — “sat in on the client kickoff, drafted the meeting summary” — turn the same timesheet into the raw material for a résumé bullet and a recommendation letter.

Supervisors: initial the sheet weekly, not at term end. A pile of unsigned weeks in December invites both padding and honest forgetting, and a coordinator who receives a fully-initialed log doesn’t have to call you to verify it.

Frequently asked questions

What does the school or program usually need on an internship timesheet?
Dates, daily hours, a running total against the requirement, a short description of the work, and the site supervisor's verification — which is exactly the column set here. Some programs add the academic coordinator's signature at term end; there's a line for it. Check the syllabus for a required form; if there isn't one, this sheet is what coordinators typically accept.
Does an unpaid intern need a timesheet at all?
Yes, arguably more than a paid one. Under the Department of Labor's primary-beneficiary test, an unpaid internship has to be a learning arrangement — and a log that pairs hours with the work performed is the record that shows it was. The work-performed column isn't decoration; it's the evidence.
Paid interns — should they use this sheet or the employee timesheet?
A paid intern is an hourly employee: overtime, minimum wage, and payroll records all apply. Use the employee timesheet for pay and keep this sheet for the school's hours requirement, or simply have the intern log both — the hours are identical, the audiences aren't.
How do I track hours across a whole semester?
Carry the running total forward: each week's “hours completed before this week” is last week's “hours to date.” Save one file per week or one tab per week in the same workbook. At term end the last sheet's hours-to-date line is the number the coordinator signs off on, backed by every week behind it.
