Data Analyst Cover Letter Templates & Example
Analytics hiring managers want to know one thing before the screen: did your analysis change a decision? The letter inside these templates answers it in the second paragraph — a dashboard or analysis, the business result it drove, and a second example showing the pipeline or definitions you built — with SQL, Python, and your BI tool named. Formal aegean, twotone tealcharcoal, or monogram sapphire.
Pick a letterhead; the letter inside is written in metrics.
Formal in aegean for finance and enterprise analytics teams, Twotone in tealcharcoal for product and marketing analytics, Monogram in sapphire for senior analyst and analytics engineer roles.

Dear [Hiring Manager Name],
I am writing to apply for the [Position Title] position at [Company Name]. I am a data analyst with [X years] of experience turning [type of data — product, marketing, operations, financial] data into decisions, using [SQL, Python/R, Tableau/Power BI/Looker], and the posting’s focus on [specific requirement — e.g., building self-serve dashboards, defining KPIs, experiment analysis] is where I have made the most difference.
At [Current/Previous Company], I [a specific analytical result — e.g., built the retention dashboard the leadership team reviews weekly, identifying a 14% drop-off at onboarding step three that a product fix recovered within a quarter]. I also [a second result — e.g., automated the monthly reporting pipeline in Python and dbt, cutting manual prep from two days to two hours, and wrote the metric definitions the company now standardizes on].
[Company Name] interests me because [a specific reason — the scale or richness of its data, a product decision you have read about, its analytics team’s approach]. I am rigorous about data quality, clear when I present to non-technical stakeholders, and quick to ask the question behind the request.
My resume is attached, along with [a link to a portfolio, dashboard sample, or GitHub if you have one]. I would welcome a conversation about the questions your team is working on now. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

What a data analyst cover letter should say.
The letter is judged the way your analyses will be — did it answer the question, and was it clear. Four things the manager is looking for:
- An analysis that changed something. ’Identified a 14% drop-off at onboarding step three; the product fix recovered it within a quarter.’ Decision, then outcome.
- The toolset, in a sentence. SQL, Python or R, dbt, Tableau/Power BI/Looker — the posting’s names, in the posting’s order.
- Something you built that others use. A dashboard leadership reviews weekly, metric definitions the company standardized on, an automated report. Leverage, not just answers.
- The question behind the request. One line showing you ask why before you query. Analytics managers hire for it.
Entry-level or career-changing into analytics? A capstone, a Kaggle project, or a portfolio dashboard with a real dataset fills the analysis paragraph — the career change letter handles the pivot framing. Pair the letter with a data analyst resume; data scientists and business analysts use the same letter with their own examples.
Fill it in.
- Open a template in Google Docs or download the Word file.
- Fill the [brackets] with one analysis and its business result, one thing you built, and the posting’s tools.
- Add a portfolio or dashboard link if you have one, export a PDF, and attach.
