Engineering Cover Letter Templates & Example
An engineering cover letter is read by an engineer, and engineers read for the specifics: your discipline and licensure status, a project with a real scale, the codes you design to, and the software you draw and analyze in. The letter inside these three templates puts all four in the first two paragraphs. It works for mechanical, civil, electrical, and structural applications — swap the bracketed discipline, project, and codes and the letter is yours.
Pick a letterhead; the letter inside speaks engineer.
Classic in navy for consulting firms and public agencies, Contemporary in fjord for design-build and product companies, Banner in forest for field and construction roles. Same engineering letter in each.

Dear [Hiring Manager Name],
I am writing to apply for the [Position Title] position at [Company Name]. I am a [discipline — mechanical / civil / electrical] engineer with [X years] of experience in [specialty — e.g., structural design, HVAC systems, power distribution], [licensure — PE (State) / EIT, FE passed], and the posting’s scope — [specific requirement from the posting] — is work I have delivered on projects of similar size.
At [Current/Previous Company], I served as [role — engineer of record / lead design engineer / project engineer] on [project — e.g., a 180,000 sq ft distribution center, a 12 MW substation upgrade, a municipal water main replacement]. I [specific result with scale — e.g., delivered the design package two weeks ahead of the permitting deadline and 6% under the construction estimate] and worked to [codes and standards — e.g., IBC, ASCE 7, NEC, ASHRAE 90.1] using [software — e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, ETABS, Civil 3D].
I am drawn to [Company Name] because [a specific reason — its portfolio in the sector, a project you admire, its approach to sustainability or safety, its multidisciplinary team]. What an engineering cover letter should say.
Engineering hiring managers screen letters for four things in the first fifteen seconds, and the template puts each one where they look:
- Discipline and licensure, first sentence. ’Civil engineer, PE (Colorado), eight years in site development.’ EIT or FE-passed counts — say it.
- A project with scale. Square feet, megawatts, budget, tonnage, miles of pipe — the number your discipline uses, and your role on it (engineer of record, lead designer, project engineer).
- Codes and software, by name. IBC, ASCE 7, NEC, ASHRAE 90.1; Revit, ETABS, Civil 3D, SolidWorks. Reviewers look for their own tools.
- The construction phase. RFIs, submittals, field changes — proof you’ve carried a design past the plot.
Engineering student or new graduate? Put your capstone, co-op, or Formula SAE project where the project paragraph is and your FE status in the first sentence — the internship letter and recent graduate letter show the shape. Pair the letter with the matching resume: civil, mechanical, or electrical. Software engineers have their own letter.
Fill it in.
- Open a template in Google Docs or download the Word file.
- Fill the [brackets]: discipline and license, one project with scale and your role, the codes and software the posting names.
- Keep it to one page, export a PDF, and pair it with a resume from the same color family.
