Project Manager Cover Letter Templates & Example

A project manager's cover letter is judged on whether it sounds like someone who delivers: scope, budget, team, method, and a result with dates. The letter inside these templates gives the reader those in the first two paragraphs — the size of what you've run, your certification, one program delivered on time and under budget, and the tools you run it in. Classic atlantic, contemporary petrol, or banner harbor.

Three PM letters

Pick a letterhead; the letter inside reads like a status report — a good one.

Classic in atlantic for construction, government, and enterprise PMOs, Contemporary in petrol for software and product delivery, Banner in harbor for agency and marketing program roles.

Project Manager — Classic Atlantic

The timeless centered letterhead in atlantic, carrying the project manager letter — budget, team size, methodology, certification, and one delivery result with dates.

Project Manager — Contemporary Petrol

A left-aligned contemporary header in petrol, carrying the project manager letter — budget, team size, methodology, certification, and one delivery result with dates.

Project Manager — Banner Harbor

A full-width color name banner in harbor, carrying the project manager letter — budget, team size, methodology, certification, and one delivery result with dates.

The PMO's read

What a project manager cover letter should say.

Hiring managers for PM roles have read a thousand letters that say ’detail-oriented’ and ’cross-functional.’ They’re looking for evidence of scale and delivery:

  • Scale in the first sentence. Budgets up to $X, teams of X, X projects a year — and the type: software, construction, launches, implementations.
  • One delivery result with dates. ’A 14-month migration across five teams, delivered on schedule and 8% under budget.’ Schedule and budget are the two numbers that matter.
  • Certification and method. PMP, CSM, PRINCE2; Agile, hybrid, stage-gate — in one line, with the tools (Jira, MS Project, Smartsheet).
  • What you’re known for. One honest strength: surfacing risk early, keeping executives informed without meeting bloat, holding vendors to dates.

Project coordinator moving up, or a specialist moving into PM? Lead with the largest thing you have coordinated and the certification you are pursuing — the internal promotion letter covers the in-house version. Pair with a project manager resume; construction PMs may prefer the engineering letter.

Fill it in.

  2. Fill the [brackets]: project type and scale, one delivery with schedule and budget numbers, certification, method, tools.

PM questions

Project Manager cover letter FAQ

How do I write a project manager cover letter?
Scale and type of projects in the first sentence, one delivery result with schedule and budget numbers, certification and method in a line, why this company, and the ask. Four short paragraphs. The letter above is the template with brackets where your numbers go.
Should I mention PMP in my cover letter?
Yes, in the first paragraph — and if you're pursuing it, say 'PMP candidate, exam scheduled [month].' Many PM postings filter on it.
How do I write a project manager cover letter with no PM title?
Use the largest thing you've coordinated — a launch, an implementation, an event, a move — and write it with PM vocabulary: scope, schedule, budget, stakeholders, result. Coordinators, analysts, and team leads often have real delivery experience without the title; the letter is where you make that case.
What if I don't have exact budget numbers?
Use the scale you can honestly state: team size, duration, number of vendors, number of sites, users affected. Any concrete scale beats an adjective.
Is this right for an IT or construction project manager?
Yes — swap the project type and tools (Jira and sprint cadence for IT; Procore, Primavera, and CMAR for construction). The structure is identical; the vocabulary is yours.
How long should a project manager cover letter be?
One page, 200–250 words. A PM who can't keep a letter short is a hard sell.
