Graphic Designer Cover Letter Templates & Example

A design cover letter has one job the resume can't do: point the reader at three pieces of your work and say why each one matters for this role. The letter inside these templates does that — portfolio link in the first paragraph, one measurable design result, tools by name, and three portfolio pieces mapped to the posting. Banner coral, twotone amethyst, or minimalist charcoal: choose the letterhead that matches your portfolio's voice.

Three design letters

Pick a letterhead that looks like your work.

Banner in coral for brand and marketing studios, Twotone in amethyst for digital and product design, Minimalist in charcoal for editorial and agency roles. The same portfolio-first letter in each.

Graphic Designer — Banner Coral

A full-width color name banner in coral, carrying the graphic designer letter — portfolio link up front and three pieces mapped to the role — the letter as a design brief.

Graphic Designer — Twotone Amethyst

A two-tone split header in amethyst, carrying the graphic designer letter — portfolio link up front and three pieces mapped to the role — the letter as a design brief.

Graphic Designer — Minimalist Charcoal

A minimalist single-rule header in charcoal, carrying the graphic designer letter — portfolio link up front and three pieces mapped to the role — the letter as a design brief.

Dear [Hiring Manager Name],

I am applying for the [Position Title] role at [Company Name]. I am a graphic designer with [X years] of experience in [specialty — brand identity, editorial, packaging, digital and social], and my portfolio at [yourportfolio.com] shows the range of work the posting describes — [specific deliverables named in the posting].

At [Current/Previous Company or Studio], I [a specific, measurable design result — e.g., led the rebrand of a regional retail chain across 40 locations, from logo system to signage and packaging; redesigned the email program, lifting click-through by 27%]. I work fluently in [tools — Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Figma] and I am comfortable owning a project from brief to press check or developer handoff.

I want to work at [Company Name] specifically because [a researched reason — a campaign or product you admire, its design team’s recent work, its brand’s visual direction]. Three pieces in my portfolio speak directly to this role: [Project A — one line], [Project B — one line], and [Project C — one line].

My resume and portfolio link are attached. I would welcome the chance to talk through my process and how I would approach [a current challenge you can see in their brand or product]. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Morgan Reed

The creative director's read

What a graphic design cover letter should say.

A creative director opens the portfolio before the letter. The letter’s job is to tell them where to look and what they’re seeing:

  • Portfolio link, first paragraph. Not the last line — the first. The reader has the portfolio open before finishing the letter.
  • One result with a number. A rebrand across 40 locations; email click-through up 27%; a packaging line that shipped. Design has numbers too.
  • Three pieces, one line each. ’Project A — the identity system I’d bring to your sub-brands.’ Map each to something in the posting.
  • Tools, briefly. Illustrator, InDesign, Figma, After Effects — one sentence. The portfolio proves the fluency.

Design student or junior designer? Class projects and freelance work are portfolio pieces — the internship letter shows how to present them. Marketing and social designers: the marketing letter is the adjacent shape. Pair with a graphic designer resume that matches your portfolio.

Brief it

Fill it in.

  1. Open a template in Google Docs or download the Word file.
  2. Put your portfolio URL in the first paragraph, then fill the three portfolio-piece brackets with real project names.
  3. Export a PDF (or match the letter’s typography to your portfolio), and attach.
Design questions

Graphic Designer cover letter FAQ

Should a graphic designer's cover letter be designed?
Lightly. A clean letterhead in your palette is enough — the portfolio is the design sample, the letter is the brief. Heavy layout in a cover letter reads as trying too hard, and it can break in applicant tracking systems. Match fonts and color to your resume and stop there.
How do I write a graphic design cover letter with no experience?
Treat class projects, freelance work, and self-initiated pieces as the portfolio — they are. Link to them in the first paragraph, describe one with a result ('the poster series the department used for the spring show'), and map three pieces to the posting. Juniors get hired on the work, not the job history.
Should I attach portfolio samples to the cover letter?
Link, don't attach. A URL to a portfolio site (or a Behance/Dribbble page) in the first paragraph keeps the letter light and lets the reader see the work at full size. Attach a PDF sample only if the posting asks.
What tools should I mention?
The ones in the posting, in one sentence — Adobe Creative Suite by app, Figma, Sketch, After Effects, Procreate. If the posting names a tool you don't use, name the closest one you do.
Is this template right for a UI/UX designer?
Yes with two swaps: the portfolio pieces become case studies (problem, process, outcome) and the tools become Figma, prototyping, and research methods. Product design managers read for process, so give each case study one line about it.
How long should a design cover letter be?
Under 250 words. Three paragraphs is common; the template's four are short. Let the portfolio be long.
