Resignation Letter Due to Stress or Burnout

Burnout resignations get written at midnight and regretted at nine. The letter inside these templates is the version you'll be glad you sent: it resigns with a date, says in one sentence that the demands of the role have affected your health and you're stepping away for your well-being, is explicit that it isn't an accusation, and hands off cleanly. Printed in full below; free in Word and Google Docs.

[Month Day, Year]

[Manager Name]
[Title]
[Company Name]
[Company Address]

Dear [Manager Name],

Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my position as [Job Title] at [Company Name]. My last day of employment will be [Last Day — two weeks from today, or an earlier date if you need it].

I have reached a point where the demands of the role are affecting my health, and after a good deal of reflection I have decided that stepping away is the right decision for me. I want to be clear that this is about my own well-being; I am grateful for the support you have shown me and for what I have learned here.

I will use my remaining time to finish what I can and to leave clear documentation for whoever takes over — [current projects, recurring responsibilities, contacts]. I am glad to walk a colleague through my work before I go.

Thank you for the opportunities during my time at [Company Name]. I wish you and the team well.

Sincerely,

Samuel Hart

What to say

How to resign because of stress without burning the bridge.

The manager reading this may be part of the cause. The letter still has to work as a record, so:

  • Resign with a date, and give what notice you can. Two weeks if you’re able; an earlier date if you’re not. Say which.
  • One sentence of reason. ’The demands of the role are affecting my health, and I’ve decided that stepping away is right for me.’ That’s it — no workload inventory, no comparison to colleagues.
  • Make it about you, explicitly. ’This is about my own well-being’ keeps the letter from reading as a complaint and keeps your reference intact.
  • Hand off what you can. Documentation and a walk-through for a colleague. Don’t promise the heroic finish that got you here.

If the problem is the workplace rather than the workload — a manager, a culture — the hostile work environment letter puts that on the record instead. If a medical professional is involved, the health-reasons letter is the better fit, and ask HR about leave before you resign. And if you need to go today, the immediate letter has a health version.

Three steps

Fill it in and send.

  1. Wait until morning. Then download a template — the letter inside is already the calm version.
  2. Fill the brackets: last day, what you’ll document and hand off. Leave the reason sentence as written.
  3. Export a PDF, tell your manager first, and send it. Then stop working at your last day, not after.
Questions

Stress & Burnout resignation FAQ

Should I mention stress or burnout in my resignation letter?
One sentence, yes, if it's the truth and you want it on the record — it can matter later for benefits or for a fair reference. Keep it about your health ('affecting my health… stepping away for my well-being'), not about the workload or the people. The letter above shows the line.
Can I resign due to stress without notice?
You can; in at-will states nothing requires notice. But if you can manage two weeks, give them — the reference and the exit will both be cleaner. If you can't, the immediate resignation letter's health version handles a same-day departure.
Should I take leave instead of resigning for burnout?
Often, yes. Ask HR about FMLA (job-protected leave for eligible U.S. employees) or short-term disability before you resign; a month away sometimes changes the decision, and it preserves your benefits while you decide. Resign if the role itself is the problem.
Will a stress resignation hurt my references?
Not if the letter stays about you. 'The demands of the role affected my health' is something most managers have felt themselves; 'this team is unmanageable' is a fight. The letter above is written on the right side of that line.
What should I say in the exit interview?
More than the letter, less than everything. Specific, factual, unemotional — the workload numbers, the coverage gaps — and only if you believe it will be used well. You are not obligated to fix the job on your way out.
Is this letter free to use?
Yes — copy the text above or download it in Word or Google Docs. Free, no signup.
