Writing for students

Evidence a young resume can’t hold.

A student’s application is thin by definition — your letter is where the missing evidence lives. The readers on the other side are looking for three things:

Daily observation — you see them 180 days a year; the reader gets twenty minutes. Spend your specifics: the project, the question, the moment.
Work-shaped habits — punctuality, completion, initiative. For first jobs especially, classroom behavior is the only work history there is.
A real prediction — end with what you believe they’ll do next. Readers trust teachers who commit.

What should a teacher include in a student reference letter?

Your standing (subject, school, how long you've taught them), two or three qualities you've actually observed, one concrete example, and contact information. The example is the engine — “her research paper went three drafts past the requirement” outworks any adjective. For younger students with thin records, classroom habits are the evidence: attendance, completion, how they treat classmates.

Can I write a reference for a student applying for their first job?

Yes — and you may be the only reference they can offer, which makes it matter more. Frame classroom behavior as work evidence: showing up daily, finishing what's assigned, handling responsibility. Employers hiring teenagers aren't expecting job history; they're asking whether someone reliable has watched this kid operate. You have.

How is a student reference different from a college recommendation?

Scope. This general student letter serves jobs, programs, camps, and applications broadly — it's reusable. A college recommendation targets admission specifically and often follows a school's formal process with deadlines and portals. What if I barely know the student who asked?

Tell them honestly and suggest the teacher who knows them better — a thin letter reads as thin, and admissions readers and employers spot generic praise instantly. If you're their best option anyway, meet with them first: ten minutes of asking about their activities and goals gives you the specifics an honest letter needs.

How do I write a reference letter for a student?

Say what you taught them and when, then give evidence: a project, a piece of work, growth over the year, how they treated classmates. Match the qualities to what the reader needs — a first job wants reliability, a selective program wants intellectual engagement. The three versions above cover each.
