Character Reference Letter Templates
A character reference has one job: put your credibility behind someone else's name. These three templates carry complete letters — one general-purpose, one built on years of acquaintance, one written from inside a community — each with bracketed prompts that pull the specific, concrete details that make a reference believable instead of generic.
Pick the letter that matches how you know them.
The strongest character letter is written from where you actually stand — a steady classic for the general case, a monogram for the friendship measured in decades, a soft sage for the fellow volunteer or congregation member.
One story beats ten adjectives.
Whoever reads a character reference has read hundreds of them, and they skim the adjectives — honest, reliable, hardworking — because every letter has those. What they slow down for is the sentence that could only be written by someone who was actually there:
- Name the relationship precisely — “my neighbor of eleven years,” not “a person I know.” Vague standing makes vague letters.
- Tell one specific story — a commitment kept at real cost, a mistake owned and repaired. The brackets in each template ask you for exactly this.
- Offer contact and mean it — a reference with a phone number reads differently than one without, even if nobody ever calls.
And write only what you have seen. A character letter spends your credibility — the templates are structured so every claim in them is one you can stand behind out loud.
From download to signed letter.
- Download the version that matches how you know them — the letter inside is complete.
- Fill the brackets: [Full Name], [the relationship], the qualities you have genuinely seen, and one concrete story.
- Sign it, date it, and send it as a PDF — or print and sign in ink if the recipient wants paper.
