Choosing one

Which of these should you use?

Personal letterhead is the one kind of stationery nobody needs and everybody notices. A letter of condolence, a note to a landlord, a reference for a neighbour, a thank-you that deserves better than email — all of them land differently on a page with your own name set properly at the top. These ten are free to download and edit, in Microsoft Word and in Google Docs.

Printing on half-sheet and monarch stationery

Personal correspondence is often not letter size. Half-sheet (5.5 × 8.5 in) and monarch (7.25 × 10.5 in) are both traditional for social stationery, and a short note on a full sheet can look stranded. Every template here is built at 8.5 × 11, but the conversion is one dialog: in Word open Layout → Size → More Paper Sizes and enter the dimensions you want, then pull the margins in. Two sheets of half-size fit on one letter page if you would rather print and cut.

Which Word versions do these open in?

All of them from Word 2007 forward — 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021, Microsoft 365, and Word for Mac. The download is a .dotx template rather than a document, so opening it starts a fresh letter and leaves your master copy untouched. On Windows 10 and 11 it opens on a double-click with nothing to install. If you already have letterhead printed on paper and want a digital version, scanning it and dropping the image into one of these layouts is usually faster than rebuilding it from scratch.

How to use them

Customize in two minutes.

  1. Pick a design and choose your editor — Microsoft Word downloads the template (a .dotx file; opening it creates a fresh document and leaves the original intact for next time), or Google Docs prompts you to make a copy in Drive.
  2. Replace the placeholder tokens — [Your Name], [Family Name], [Street Address], [Recipient], etc. Embedded graphics (monograms, crests, ornaments) can be replaced with your own — right-click → Change Picture (Word), or click → Replace image (Google Docs).
  3. Type your letter where the sample paragraph is. Save and print on standard 8.5 × 11 paper, or send as a PDF.
