Reference Letter Templates for Google Docs

Every reference letter here lives as a real Google Doc — not a Word file you have to import and repair. Click any design and Google offers to make a copy straight into your Drive: editable immediately, autosaving as you type, available from any device, and shareable with whoever proofreads for you. The letter inside is already written; the brackets wait for your specifics.

Why write references in Docs.

Reference letters have a rhythm of their own — asked for on a Tuesday, due by Friday, written in stolen minutes. Google Docs fits that rhythm:

  • Start on one device, finish on another — the copy in your Drive follows you from office to couch.
  • Nothing to lose — autosave means the half-written letter survives the closed laptop.
  • Reuse forever — your copy stays in Drive; next reference request, duplicate it and start ten minutes ahead.
  • Every situation, not just these eight — all sixty letters in the library are Google Docs too; the Open in Google Docs button sits beside every download, court to co-op board.

Prefer the desktop app? Every design is also a straight .docx download — same letters, same letterheads.

Three clicks and a signature

From copy to sent.

  1. Click Open in Google Docs on a design, then Make a copy — it lands in your Drive.
  2. Fill every [bracket]: names, years, the relationship, one concrete story. Use Ctrl+F for [ to catch strays.
  3. File → Download → PDF, sign, and send it where the applicant directs.
Drive questions

Google Docs FAQ

How does the “Open in Google Docs” button work?
Each button links to a copy page: Google shows the template and a “Make a copy” button, and one click puts an editable copy in your own Drive. The original stays untouched — your copy is fully yours: rename it, edit it, share it with whoever proofreads for you. You’ll need to be signed in to a Google account, since the copy lands in your Drive.
Is the Google Docs version identical to the Word file?
Same letter, same letterhead design — Google converts the document on import, and these templates use deliberately conservative formatting so the conversion is clean. If you ever notice a spacing difference, it will be cosmetic; glance over the page before you export a PDF, as you would before signing anything.
How do I turn my finished letter into a PDF?
In your copy: File → Download → PDF Document. That’s the version to send — it locks the layout and reads identically everywhere. Send the editable Doc link only if the person who asked wants to make changes themselves.
Can I share the Doc with the person who asked for the reference?
Yes — Share → add their email, or send a view-only link. A common workflow: write the letter in your copy, share it view-only with the applicant so they know it’s done, and send the PDF to wherever the application goes. Your copy stays in your Drive for the next time someone asks — future letters start ten minutes ahead.
